San Diego Fleet Week Culminates in the MCAS Miramar Air Show Oct 1,2,3

Fleet Week is a two week period in early Fall to celebrate the large military presence and influence in San Diego and it gives the citizens of San Diego a chance to see first hand the large and important role they play in protecting us. We are indeed grateful to the men and women that dedicate and risk their lives to this most important endeavor of protecting our country.

San Diego Fleet week that kicked off last weekend with a huge Festival, comes to an end this weekend culminating in one of the top air shows in the US, featuring the Blue Angles, The Canadian Forces Snowbirds, The U.S. Army Golden Knights and a Marine Air Ground Task Force Demo. For two weeks, the strong and versatile military presence of San Diego county has been on public display with a variety of activities allowing the citizenry to interact and become better acquainted with the strong roles San Diego plays in the defense of our country.

The presence of many military ships and displays gave all San Diego citizens and visitors to our city a glimpse of some of our Naval, Marine  and air machinery up close and personal.

William - The guys don't need to paint those boats by themselves.  It's a team effort!  They also have equipment:-)

My son, worked on scheduling aircraft maintenance.  I remember back during Desert Storm in 1990, the Kitty Hawk was the staging area.  My son talked about breaking regulations of taking parts off new engines to keep the planes flying.  It was easier to change a part, than it was an engine.  They weren't supposed to do that, but it was faster and efficient.

Hi Myrl, I think your son had the right idea. One of the wastful ideas of the military is that they can replace as often as they repair. Of course these comapnies building them BANK on the replacement as opposed to repair. Just imaginehow great of a savings we could have if your son ran the military complex.

What a awesome event.  And you've given us a spectacular display of the planes, helicopters,  and ships. I always enjoy touring the old military ships and submarines that are on display in various places.

I'm glad you attended and are sharing the event with us via the photos.  Thanks!!

Hi Tom, I love your new photo. It was really awesome to  be able to interact with all these amazing ships while they were here in San Diego. They are enormous.

As an Air Force brat, I am partial to anything that flies but, I also love the massive ships (especially the aircraft carriers!)!  Great pics (of course, you always take such gorgeous shots) and to see the amazing technology just puts what we know about technology into perspective, doesn't it?!

Enjoy your weekend...

Hi Debe, It does put it in perspective, indeed. It will be interesting to see what the next 10 years of advancing technology brings.

Good Morning Debra, Thank you. With the great concentration of war ships back in the Pearl Harbor days, I doubt we will ever see a full concentration of our military might in one place, so I am guessing there will be opportunities all over the US for us to get a small glimmer of the amazing and powerful war machinery.

Hi William -- I loved seeing your photos.  I was stationed for a time at the Naval Training Center (NTC) in San Diego -- I'm not even sure it's active anymore, I heard it's all civilian use now.  I was stationed on an aircraft carrier for part of my stint and these photos instantly transport me to "back in the day." Thanks! :)

Big ships like those are certainly exciting.  Many years ago when my oldest daughter was just 18 months old, we were permitted to go aboard a Navy nuclear warship to visit a friend who was a signalman on the ship.  It was anchored a ways offshore in San Diego and we had to take a water taxi out to it.

We visited with him at the very top of the ship and it is sure not child-proof up there!  I had to hold on tight to my daughter because there were no safety railings and she could run fast.  It was exciting touring the ship though and seeing all the signal flags and other gear he used.  I'll bet fleet week is really exciting to attend. As usual some great photos from William!

I find these big boats to be fascinating. I once got a chance to tour a Nimitz class carrier. Wow...
