Turkeys are Here!
Hibbard Road Gardens, Winnetka

No - not the ones you eat - you still have to go to the grocery store for those!Hibbard Road Gardens, Winnetka

Hibbard Road Gardens in Winnetka has 3 beautiful Narragansett turkeys on display during the Thanksgiving holiday period.  These birds are native to the east coast and are a seriously endangered historic variety of turkey. The Narragansett turkey is an American original, the parent of all other American turkeys.

Hibbard Road Gardens, WinnetkaThese birds are much larger (up to 40 lbs) than today's selectively bred commercial turkeys.  They have been rare for decades - just 100 breeding pairs 12 years ago, although the numbers have risen slightly.

These turkeys are guests from Garfield Farm Museum, a farm and inn in LaFox, Illinois that has been in continuous operation since 1841.  They strive to perserve, raise and display the "antique" animal breeds that were common 160 years ago.

These beautiful turkeys are on display everyday while the nursery is open:

For those who don't know, Hibbard Road Gardens has been sold to the James Builders who plan to build 6 new homes on the site.  The sale has been held up temporarily due to testing on soil samples, but we'll all know if their sign goes up.

Home is where the hearth is.

I'll have to check them out... I'd ask how long they're going to be there... but I think I know the answer.

Hi Margaret... I don't think I could live on a farm....  the animals all have such wonderful personalities... Was watching Gordon Ramsey on Youtube the other night.. and it linked into a pig farm ona neighboring video.. I was crying at the cruelty subjected to pigs... BUT the turkeys are beautiful - didn't wish to get maudlin. Best, Gay

Alan - I was assured these turkeys are never . . . you know what . . .

Gay - I'm a vegetarian and animal lover - I could never even watch a video like that.

Hi Margaret: I know these turkeys from Garfield Farm! There is nothing like a trip to see an unusual animal to fill up a morning or afternoon with little kids. Everyone in your area should get over to see these cool looking birds.

Congrats on the feature.

You know Margaret, these birds are magnificent when in the wild....going back a few years, when hunting, if you had one in your sights, that's good eating for at least a couple of days. They even came real close to being our National bird at one point. Becoming famous didint work out too well for them

Leslie - I had not heard of the farm before writing this post - I'm glad they're there doing this good stuff

Michael - ditto

Richie - That's what I learned also!  I don't see any commerical turkeys sold for Thanksgiving that are 40 lbs - when the Pilgrims bagged one of these guys it was really a feast.
