Spooky and scarey Halloween San Diego
There are dozens of spooky and scarey things to do this weekend leading up to Halloween on Monday and Day of the Dead on Tuesday and Wednesday, so if you can't find something, you're not looking very hard.
Here are my top places to go and things to do to experience the best of spooky and scarey Halloween San Diego:
- Monster Bash Block Party — This is in the Gaslamp Quarter and is an adults only party. 6:00 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. $30 in advance, $35 at the door. $3,000 grand prize for the winner of the costume contest. 619-233-5008 or sandiegomonsterbash.com
- The Dark — You might meet the Proctor Valley Monster at the haunted house in Chula Vista Eastlake, a house that might truly be haunted if we belive the tales of the Proctor Valley Monster. 7:00 p.m. to midnight on October 27 to October 31, inclusive. 851 Showroom Place, Suite 100, Chula Vista. $20. 619-500-2440 or thedarkhh.com
- Seaport Village Halloween Bash — This is Seaport Village's first Halloween celebration. 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. Free!
- Halloween Family Day — Takes place throughout Balboa Park from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Many museums will be offering discounts. Balboa Park
- The Haunted Hotel — Listed as one of the top 13 haunted houses in America, this is always a popular event with the lines stretching long and the wait times up to an hour. 424 Market Street, downtown San Diego. $15 to $27 cash only at the door. Check Haunted Hotel for times.
- The Haunted Trail — An outdoor "haunted house" that takes you through a one-mile wooded maze in Balboa Park. I've been on this one and it's a lot of fun. $15 to $32. Sixth Avenue and Juniper Street at Marston Point just south of the Laurel Street Bridge. Check Haunted Trail for times.
- Scream Zone — The Del Mar Fairgrounds always gets into Halloween in a big way with its Haunted Hayride, House of Horror, and The Chamber. $14.99 to $27.99. Check times by calling 858-755-1161 or visiting thescreamzone.com
- Día de los Muertos — 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 1 & 2, in Old Town. Although it's a celebration of death, which sounds a little morbid, the festivities are anything but morbid. You can, however, visit 30 altars throughout Old Town that are dedicated to the Whaley family (early San Diego pioneers), pop culture icons, and probably even one dedicated to Steve Jobs since he died recently. I've been to this a couple of times and never failed to have a lot of fun. 619-297-7511 or oldtownsandiegoguide.com
