San Diego has a rich history and a variety of museums for residents and visitors to enjoy. Here are some of the more unique ones.
Carlsbad is lucky to be the owner of one of these museums, and a rather interesting one at that.
The Carlsbad Museum of Making Music is a fun place to visit whether or not you are a music buff. This interactive museum gives visitors a broad perspective on the history of music in the last century or so. Vintage instruments, musical scores, photographs, specialized exhibits (such as the ones currently showing on violins and on music by The Beatles). You an also enjoy their audio and video library and the music story. Hours are 10 – 5 from Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $3 - $5, or free for Museum members. The Museum of Making Music is located at 5790 Armada Drive in Carlsbad not far from the Palomar Airport Road exit off the 5 freeway.
Oceanside, to the north, hosts the California Surf Museum, a must see for anyone with an linking of interest in the surfing culture and history that is so much a part of Southern California life.
Interested in flying and everything associated with it, including the history in our area? Visit the Flying Leathernecks Museum in Mira Mar (east of La Jolla) at MCAS off Mira Mar Road. Free admission. Open Tuesday through Sunday 9 AM – 3:30 PM, this is the only official Marine Corpos Museum in the western US.
Love plants? You will love the Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas about 1 mile from the downtown area and Moonlight Beach at 230 Quail Gardens Drive. This walking museum affors visotrs the opportunity to experience the many types of native California plants, along with rare bamboo, a rainforest, and a Children’s garden. Visit during the holidays for a special exhibit – wonderful to view at night with all the lights and fun things to do. Open daily 9 AM until 5 PM except holidays, with special hours for the Christmas season. Admission is $5 - $10.
Model railroad buffs will get a charge out of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park. Hours are 11 – 4 Tuesday through Friday, and 11 – 5 on Weekends. Open some holidays. Balboa Park is, itself, a fascinating place to visit and is home to a number of other San Diego museums : the San Diego Automotive Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Air and Space Museum, and of course everyone’s favorite, the world famous San Diego Zoo.
