Read Across America Day is March 2!

Grab a Book!

This is one of my favorite days to highlight because reading is not just booksfun but it is important for our whole society.

Read Across America Day is sponsored by the National Education Association and has been since 1998.

Why is this important to me?

When I finished graduate school, I got a job administering psychological tests. Many had just been released from prison. The first test I had to administer was one to determine if they could read at or above the 3rd-grade level.

I could not believe how many could not read at that level!

Imagine going through life with little or no ability to read.

How can you get a job?

How can you fill out applications?

Years ago the City of Delray Beach initiated a campaign for Grade-Level Reading to address this problem.

children readingWhat you can do…

-Pick up a book and read!

-If you have children, let them see you reading.

-Take your children to the library on a regular basis.

-Read to your children at night.

-Volunteer at schools or other organizations to help others learn to read.

Share your “shelfie”

Take a selfie of you with your favorite childhood book on March 2 and post it on social media with #Shelfie and #ReadAcrossAmerica

United Through Reading program

The NEA recognized the sacrifices that military families make. One is that of the bedtime story read to them by a parent.

The deployed parent can read and record a story which is sent home to their family.

And, if you want to help, a $50 donation can support one military family with UTR videos through their deployment or separation.

So...what was your favorite childhood book?

I was outside being a tomboy!!! I was the best pitcher in the 'hood...

Hi Kathy... I've been a huge reader since I learned to read and my mother encouraged it by signing me up for children's book clubs and magazine subscriptions back in the 1950's when they weren't all that common. There's still nothing like the feel of opening up a brand new book to read. And, I had my first library card at the age of 8... and would make a weekly trip to the library on Fridays after school to select my books for the next week.

faye schubert ~ we always went out of the city in summers, but I would travel with a huge stack of books that could be checked out for the entire months of July and August.

I remember at school getting that little scholastic book club paper, and going home asking if I could get some books. I read so many books at the library over the summer and would ride my bike every week to get a new stack!

I have always been an avid book reader. I'm back on it, and averaging almost a book a night that I read. It is so much more entertaining than television.

Barbara Todaro you are so funny!  I always have a book going. I have been told that when I was a kid my favorite book was Peter Rabbit.

Nina Hollander I wish more children were exposed like you were to libraries and books. When my niece had her children I was delighted to hear that she took them on weekly trips to the library.

faye schubert I have the Kindle reader on my phone and iPad so I'm never without a book to read!  Don't you love it.

Paul Antonelli Hope you find a good one to read.

Donald Urschalitz it's too much to hear every day, I agree. Reading takes you away from it.

Kathy Streib what a wonderful day to celebrate. Our kids had to a certain number of books on a weekly basis, even in the summer. They developed a love of reading. My daughter prefers hard books over online books.

Hi Kathy,

Sadly, I was never read to as a child.  Fortunately, though I was a good reader but I never learned to love to read until I got older.   Now my house and kindle are full of books and audible library always has plenty of choices when I am on road trips.
