Read Across America Day is March 2!
Grab a Book!
This is one of my favorite days to highlight because reading is not just fun but it is important for our whole society.
Read Across America Day is sponsored by the National Education Association and has been since 1998.
Why is this important to me?
When I finished graduate school, I got a job administering psychological tests. Many had just been released from prison. The first test I had to administer was one to determine if they could read at or above the 3rd-grade level.
I could not believe how many could not read at that level!
Imagine going through life with little or no ability to read.
How can you get a job?
How can you fill out applications?
Years ago the City of Delray Beach initiated a campaign for Grade-Level Reading to address this problem.
What you can do…
-Pick up a book and read!
-If you have children, let them see you reading.
-Take your children to the library on a regular basis.
-Read to your children at night.
-Volunteer at schools or other organizations to help others learn to read.
Take a selfie of you with your favorite childhood book on March 2 and post it on social media with #Shelfie and #ReadAcrossAmerica
United Through Reading program
The NEA recognized the sacrifices that military families make. One is that of the bedtime story read to them by a parent.
The deployed parent can read and record a story which is sent home to their family.
And, if you want to help, a $50 donation can support one military family with UTR videos through their deployment or separation.
So...what was your favorite childhood book?
