Today is Awkward Moments Day...We’ve All Had Them
Goodness knows I’ve had my share of them! While I’m not quite sure who or why this day was started, I can tell you that it’s really healthy to share your moments like these with others.
This is a story I’ve shared in the past but tough...I’m sharing it again. Many years ago when staging was still in the “What is that?” phase, an agent called and asked if I would consult on a listing he had and if he could attend since he was new to the concept of staging.
His client was going through a messy divorce and he was trying to do what he could to help her through this. The client asked a friend to be there for the consultation. (You can see where this is going!)
The owner was a lovely lady but it was easy to see that the divorce and having to sell her home was far too much for her.
Almost as soon as we began, the seller’s friend was tripping over herself to let us know that she was an avid viewer of HGTV and knew exactly what was needed.
It seemed that as soon as I started talking, so did her friend. Two talking heads going at once. I tried to stop to let her friend finish but to no avail, she piped up with every suggestion I made.
Finally, the seller said...
“I can’t handle this! I can’t take it anymore!”
She then ran out of the room in tears.
That poor agent, with all of the hormones around him, had no idea what to do...the friend was trying to blame the agent and me.
I suggested to the friend that we let the seller have some space.
After a few minutes, I spoke to the seller and told her that I could return, if she wished, at no charge to her or we could continue the consultation, which she did. Thankfully the friend opted to zip her lip the second time around.
Was it awkward? Yes...for everyone. But, these things do happen.
But we can look at these moments from a positive perspective:
1. These OOPS moments that we have can teach us something if we’re open to it.
2. How we handle these situations will also teach others about YOU.
So, I’ve shared one of my awkward moments, care to share yours?
