Today is Awkward Moments Day...We’ve All Had Them

Goodness knows I’ve had my share of them! While I’m not quite sure who or why this day was started, I can tell you that it’s really healthy to share your moments like these with others.

This is a story I’ve shared in the past but tough...I’m sharing it again. Many oopsyears ago when staging was still in the “What is that?” phase, an agent called and asked if I would consult on a listing he had and if he could attend since he was new to the concept of staging.

His client was going through a messy divorce and he was trying to do what he could to help her through this. The client asked a friend to be there for the consultation. (You can see where this is going!)

The owner was a lovely lady but it was easy to see that the divorce and having to sell her home was far too much for her.

Almost as soon as we began, the seller’s friend was tripping over herself to let us know that she was an avid viewer of HGTV and knew exactly what was needed.

It seemed that as soon as I started talking, so did her friend. Two talking heads going at once. I tried to stop to let her friend finish but to no avail, she piped up with every suggestion I made.

Finally, the seller said...

“I can’t handle this! I can’t take it anymore!”

She then ran out of the room in tears.

That poor agent, with all of the hormones around him, had no idea what to do...the friend was trying to blame the agent and me.

I suggested to the friend that we let the seller have some space.

After a few minutes, I spoke to the seller and told her that I could return, if she wished, at no charge to her or we could continue the consultation, which she did. Thankfully the friend opted to zip her lip the second time around.

Was it awkward? Yes...for everyone. But, these things do happen.

But we can look at these moments from a positive perspective:

1. These OOPS moments that we have can teach us something if we’re open to it.

2. How we handle these situations will also teach others about YOU.

So, I’ve shared one of my awkward moments, care to share yours?

Kathy,

The one that comes to mind is when I agreed to meet a prospective tenant (I had not met him face to face) at one the luxury office buildings.  I signed in with the guards at the desk, and waited for my client.  A gentleman carrying was looked like a painting approached me, and asked if I was looking for him.  I said yes.  I let the guard know to have him open the suite I was showing.  As we rode the elevator, I asked him what he was carrying.  It was a painting , and it was lovely.  He said, he was happy I was interested as he was talking it to the President!  OH! OH! What President?  Ronald Reagan, he said.  He loves this artist!   We had a big laugh!

You are not here to see an office space? I said.  No, I got off the elevator, and found my client !  LOL  A

It is always awkward when a non professional is trying to give advice, I have a client that has a brother that thinks he knows it all.

Hi Kathy Streib - I am sharing this story below because it is real fresh and will be cathartic to write.  I normally would not share a story like this. My feeling is that we learn something positive from every situation we deal with...

I just closed on a home that my buyers bought.  We were dealing with one of the worst sellers I have ever had to deal with. We had to extend the closing 3 times because of this person. This last week my buyers were meeting the window company at the home to measure for new windows. I arrived a couple of minutes late and saw that the door was open and as I opened it further to get with my buyers, I came face to face with this little Napolean figure. I introduced myself and he abruptly said he was cancelling the contract, I backed away and said I was leaving because I don't represent him... I represent the buyers....(AWKWARD)! There was a lot of major drama to follow but my resolve and the resolve of my buyers got us through the deal.

Kathy it is bad enough when we are dealing with a know it all client, but much worse when it is a know it all friend or relative.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP that's the key, isn't it. We should try to learn from our experiences.

George Souto which is why since that consult, I've made the request that if they have friends or family in attendance, they need to ask them to keep their thoughts to themselves.

One of the ways we keep divorcing client transactions together...is to keep them apart from each other...on a "need to know" or be involved...friend needed to exit.

With all the awkward moments I've had you would think coming up with one as an example would be easy. I'm at a loss.
