Pondering Mothers Day And Kareem Abdul Jabbar

Likely Not A Tall Tale From Mrs. Alcindor

I have no reason to doubt Kareem Abdul-Jabbar(born:  Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr) who was a standout basketball player at UCLA and then later professionally both with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers.

My mother had to send me to the movies with my birth certificate so that I wouldn't have to pay the extra fifty cents that the adults had to pay.

                                                                                      Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Each of us have memories unique to our situation while growing up and experiencing the many firsts and subsequent events in life with advice or suggestions from our mothers.

That's one of the things I like about this quote. It is genuine.  And so real and unique to the person.  Memories and experiences combine to create the people we become.   And we remember those along with the people who continue to make them happen today on Mother's Day, 2019.

As an NYC guy, I remember the stories of Jabbar...dunking the ball at 13 years old. I hope to catch up to him soon...lol

Hi Michael Jacobs - I love your posts, they always come from a unique and special perspective that makes us think or "ponder".

Spending most of my life in SoCal - I knew the Alcindor, Wooden, and the UCLA dynasty very well. My dad was a true basketball fan. He played at Wichita State in the late 40s.  I never liked the fact that the powers to be changed the rules about dunking because of his domination.  Of course, many young people may not even realize they changed that rule because the NCAA changed it back in the mid-'70s.

Hi Michael- so many thoughts swishing through my head from your post. A completely opposite story...in college I was waiting for my boyfriend to come into town. I'd gotten all "prettied up" (or at least I thought) and was waiting on the curb for him. A little girl about 7 came over and thought I was the new girl who had just moved in and wanted to know if I wanted to come over and play dolls with her.

And...yes I love the dimension that was added by a real people quote from his mother.

Michael, I have never seen this quote before and it made me smile. I can't imagine being so tall that a birth certificate was needed to document age. Unique and genuine for sure. I really enjoyed your post.

Hi Michael, Thanks for sharing that. People are always asking age here in Florida and we are not kids anymore. (or are we?)  How old are you is a common questions. We are talking, the other end of the spectrum... 55 plus communities. Definately not going to take out my birth certificate  Hmmm, not sure I even have one. Have a great week!

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty -- I don't know how tall Kareem was as a teenager or as a pre-teen but it might be taller than I am today and my growh spurt days are long gone.   Oh well, another dream crushed. Ahh, reality.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP  - thank you very much for the very kind comment. I hope you have had an enjoyable day.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - your basketball expertise is showing - very impressive.

Kathy Streib - I love your college remembrance and laughed very hard when I first read it a few hours ago.  A classic!

Amanda S. Davidson - it's a great quote I think and I am glad you liked it too.

Janice Zaltman Realtor, LEED AP - yes I can imagine that age-restricted community real estate brings about a new/different line of questioning.

Hi Michael Jacobs .  Your post prompted an old memory.  I went to high school in D.C. and one of our big rivals was DeMatha High. They were a very good team, but we still rooted for them when they played Power Memorial at the U of Md. It was a big deal - the first ever regional HS playoffs, I think. I saw Lew Alcindor from way way far away, but he still stood out!  What a great player. - Bernie

Bernie Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I imagine Kareem would be a "stand out" in most crowds for obvious and perhaps other reasons.  Thank you for the comment and I'm glad whenever I can prompt a memory - especially a good one.

It seems believable enough for my sake. I’ve seen stuff like this before and it doesn’t seem like a “tall” tale in that sense lol.

That is a fun little tid bit!

Although I think I'm average height now, I was always one of the tallest in school as a child. I hated it.

Beth Atalay and Laura Cerrano - I also like fun twists.  A lot.

Sharon Tara - I think it might be different for girls growing up tall for their age - it's a "curse" an average height guy like me never experienced.
