Squirrel Appreciation Day…

Squirrel Appreciation Day…

Understandably, many homeowners do not want squirrels in their yard. I get it… the damage they can do to wood and wires is a homeowner’s nightmare.

However, since it is their day, I thought I’d share some photos of my little buddies. The squirrels who visited us in Delray Beach became our buddies. As soon as the garage door opened, they were in the driveway waiting for peanuts.

On one morning walk, we were about a block from home when I looked down and there was one of our squirrels waiting for a peanut.

Our squirrels in Houston have been slow to warm up to us but that’s ok. It’s better that they keep their natural fear of us. Actually, there is one grey squirrel who took a peanut from my hand but only once.

Do you have any of these little guys in your yard?

Good Morning Kathy Streib

Squirrels can be fun to watch. We don't encourage them though.

When I first moved into my home in 1983, there were a ton of beautiful Gray Squirrels.  I loved them.  However, a population of Brown Squirrels began to migrate into the neighborhood, and they seemed to displace the Gray ones.  And, these Brown Squirrels seem to be far more destructive, especially to wood.  Several years ago, I had to completely replace the gazebo in my yard.  The squirrels had completely gnawed away at the support beams for the roof.

No squirrels in my yard but plenty of quail.  It's also National Hug Day. Guess I'll focus on that.

Raymond Henson that's so funny. When we ere in Delray Beach, the peacocks would hang out in the yard and I've seen a squirrel look them square in the face.

Grant Schneider we also have red ones here but not as many.

Candice A. Donofrio I haven't seen any bunnies...yet.

Donald Urschalitz they should have lots of good food all year 'round in Florida.

Nina Hollander I've heard horror stories about that.

Michael Jacobs when I was in Delray and eating at an outdoor cafe, I looked up and there was a little squirrel in the planter next to my table. So cute.

Oh yes! Will Hamm we have two well fed cats on our street, not sure who they belong to but they tend to scare away the squirrels and the birds.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I'd rather keep them so that they can survive like they're supposed to.

Good point George Souto

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I'll bet Quincy does!!!! The neighborhood cats (two who someone feeds and they hang out on the street) chases them as well as the birds. Actually, I think they lay in wait.

Definitely Not a fan. They destroyed several birdfeeders. Got in my attic years ago when I had a house in N.Y.

Funny story about Houston squirrels. When I was in cancer treatment in Houston we were walking by the basin next to Hermann Park. We saw three people taunting a squirrel. The next thing was the squirrel aggressively going after the three people who were running away. The lesson, Don't mess with Texas squirrels.

We have several running around in our backyard and they definitely take notice when I refill the birdfeeder. However, I recently got one of those squirrel-proof feeders leaving them confused when they attempt to feed. It is fun to watch though

Hi Kathy,  Yes, there is a day for everything.  Squirrels seem to bother our dogs quite a bit.  So they check out our yard for food periodically - but don't stay too long.

Morning Kathy.

No ma'am not a one.  On the golf course they wait until you get out of the cart then they go and see if you left any snacks.  Of course, they like peanut butter crackers.
