Thirty one years of marriage and all my wife wanted was a trip to Apple Hill and a new toilet. I did not know that porcelain was the preferred gift for thirty one years of marriage, but who am I to argue.
Apple Hill is about an hour's drive up Highway 50 from Elk Grove. It is a perfect place to visit for the day. It is open year around, but really comes alive during apple season with all kinds of fun things to do. There are pumpkin patches, mazes, craft shops, bake shops, wine and hard cider tastings, you pick farms and, a little later in the year, perfect farms to get your fresh cut Christmas Tree. All in an area with a beautiful backdrop. Here are a few of the ranches that we visited on our day trip.
Boa Vista-We stop here every time we go to apple hill. This was are starting point this year and we sampled their baked goods. Mary Margaret ordered the blackberry dumpling. I was all set to try an apple donut when they brought out apple fritters with big chunks of apples in them. We were both happy!
High Hill Ranch-This is another ranch we always visit. It has all kinds of fun stuff to do. There is a restaurant, all kinds of gift shops (tents), baked goods and even a big pond for fishing. It is a very big operation.
Apple Ridge Farms-This was a new one for us and we are very happy we found it. There was all of the normal, Apple Hill fun stuff to do, plus they had this display of beautiful flowers!
Bill's Apples and Felices's Dolls-This was another new one for us and another great find. This is were we had the best Fuji Apple of the day and they gave us each one for free! The grounds were beautiful too!
Abel's Acres-This is another of our standard stops at Apple Hill. It has plenty to do too, but I did not take any photos at this one. They do have a very cool metal horse on display.
Apple Hill Recap for High Hill Ranch
There is so much to do and so many farms that you do have to pick and choose were you are going to stop. Many of the ranches have something distinctive, but most all of them sell apples, pears, pumpkins, produce and crafts. Many have a restaurant, a maze, a pumpkin patch and other activities for the kids. There are also places to taste apple cider, hard apple cider and wine. The Christmas season will be here soon and Apple Hill is a fun place to get your fresh cut Christmas Tree.
And remember, some say diamonds are a girl's best friend. Trust me, it is porcelain!
