history of searcy: A glimpse of the past. Check writing for the missus.... - 01/29/12 01:39 AM
This was found by a banker member of the family when going through old items left behind.  He chuckled and handed it to me.

Notice the check was signed with "by wife" underneath the name.  It was also "for rent" and was check No 2.  The banker member of the family thought it was somewhat amusing that the check was sent through with that signature and indicated that he doubted that it would be possible to do that today.
It just dates back to a time when the writer had perfected handwriting, the town was small, the bank was small … (12 comments)

history of searcy: Yarnell's closed their doors on a lot of memories. Including the mule barn! - 07/05/11 01:24 AM
With guilt feelings I drove down a road that says, "No through traffic.  Private property," but I suspected that since Yarnell's Ice Cream in Searcy Arkansas had shut down they'd have no one to arrest me for driving down the closed off street in Searcy AR.
I snapped pictures.  They keep saying that we'll miss the ice cream and that's no lie but we'll also miss the gaily painted trucks.  Look at the trucks behind the gates that have been locked.

How sad to see all the trucks grounded.

I loved the painted trucks.  Then there were the buildings.  … (33 comments)

history of searcy: Last rites are being held right here on this blog site. Deaths on Center Street, Searcy AR. - 02/04/11 01:12 PM
We might as well say our final good-byes to these two houses on East Center Street.  Here is what is left of them.  First is 411 East Center.

Second is 403 E Center.

403 East Center was born in 1915 and lived a peaceful existence until 2011.  Just days ago I saw people living there.  I had to take my final picture from county data because we had no warning of the quick death.  I really liked the chimney and the little eyebrows.  It sold back in 1991 through a real estate firm and two times since then.

history of searcy: Searcy Stamps Trio. Who were they? Found in old family files from Searcy Arkansas. - 12/18/10 12:39 PM

Look what turned up under stacks of old things.

These ladies were in pictures dating back to 1930's so it was a long time ago.  This is the front side of a card and there is nothing on the back.
Perhaps some of our Searcy Sleuths will consider this a challenge and tell us who they were.  Were they actually from Searcy or were they appearing in Searcy and did a special image for the city?
The picture is so clear!  And I love the dresses that were the same but different.

history of searcy: Harding College, Searcy Arkanasas, in 1948. More buildings from the campus yearbook. - 11/22/10 02:11 PM
Yesterday's blog had views of Harding College in 1948 (now Harding University).  Here are a few more views that were in the yearbook followed by the aerial view again.  See if you can find the buildings on the aerial view if you'd like.  The pictures show a great love of shade trees and prior to our love for manicured lawns.

This one is was called the Bell home.

Here is the swimming pool for boys at  the college.  Wonder if they had a swimming pool for girls?

This one is the gym.

And here is the aerial view … (16 comments)

history of searcy: It was just a good idea then. Old house saved in Searcy Arkansas. - 11/12/10 12:02 AM
Note this lovely old house.

It's well maintained, brings back memories from a long time ago when folks sat on the porch.
Now look at the house from a little further back.

What do you see?  Yep!  Apartments.  The property was bought by a very popular builder in Searcy AR back in the late 80's or early 90's and the idea was to build apartments on the large parcel of land that is within spittin' distance of downtown Searcy AR.  The builder built apartments on either side of the house but saved the house.  It was lovely then and … (11 comments)

history of searcy: Picture of a house removed in Searcy Arkansas. It was for sale at the time of photo. - 09/25/10 01:20 AM
My real estate career dates back to 1979 when I obtained my real estate license.  I admit that before that I was pretty oblivious to houses, history, city growth or anything related to housing.  Raising kids is a job that can wipe out your energy for other things.
This blog, and the fast-becoming-famous Searcy Sleuths, have given me a greater appreciation for history and the old houses around Searcy Arkansas.
The Sleuths love a mystery so here's one for today.  Where, ye Searcy Sleuths, was this house?  You can't walk the Google path and find it because it is gone.  You … (24 comments)

history of searcy: Day Care Center in Searcy Arkansas in historic home. Year 1987. - 07/29/10 02:16 AM
This blog is a test for Searcy readers as well as a memory trip for me.  During my real estate career I've helped two families obtain property for child care centers and this is one of the results.
It is extremely difficult to get licensed as a day care center.  We had to measure every room.  Dish washers could not be used.  There were so many requirements!  But the two families succeeded in opening the centers.  Both found the job too demanding and both closed after a few years.  I had this one for sale in 1987.
Now the test?  Where … (17 comments)

history of searcy: The Holmes Ranch on Holmes Road in Searcy Arkansas? Not a mansion. - 05/25/10 01:30 AM
I posted a blog a day or two ago about the mule-making on Holmes Road many years ago.  Bob Collins said he could hear braying all the way into town where he was a city slicker.
I came across a picture which seems to go along with the last blog.  It is a picture marked on the back by my mother-in-law saying, "Our old home place across road. Holmes Ranch."  The Holmes family had built a rock house on the hill and this was an old house still standing.
A card was with the picture reading, "Robert Taylor Judge property, owned by … (10 comments)

history of searcy: A Searcy resident-builder who values history and does his part to maintain it. - 02/21/09 01:40 AM
Did you hear the latest news?  The church at fill-in-the-street has bought the two houses that are on their street and will be tearing down the old houses for a parking lot!
Good news for the seller if he got a good price.
Good news for the church if they get a good deal.
SOMETIMES BAD NEWS FOR THE HISTORY OF SEARCY.
We have one builder, however, who loves history, old things and old houses and chooses to restore the houses and treasure the collectibles.  He will buy the old houses, move them to another location and restore them so that we … (22 comments)

history of searcy: Searcy Arkansas Ice and Coal Building Approximately 1940's. - 08/24/08 05:21 AM

Years ago the ice-man came to your house.  He'd have blocks of ice on a wagon or some vehicle and he'd lift those blocks into your refrigerator (ice box)  which had a place for ice storage.  You could buy probably 25, 50 or 100 lb. chunks. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Anita or Don.)
Here'a a picture of the ice plant taken by Paula for a Girl Scout's project in photography.  It's the place where the ice was frozen.  What there was for coal I don't know.  I never remember anyone delivering coal to anyone in the South but that's … (30 comments)
