Here in New Jersey the unemployment rate is rising. It's just been reported that the state's jobless rate has increased to 8.2%, surpassing the national average for the first time in 2 years.
That's not good news for 2009 college grads, who'll be out looking for employment in the next few months, but it did remind me of a story from way back when I was a recent college grad and unemployment rate was double digit.
It seems that after a very good job interview, a young Engineer fresh out of MIT was asked, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"
She replied in an optimistic tone, "In the neighborhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package."
"Well, what would you say to a package of 5-weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years - say, a red Corvette?" the interviewer asked.
The Engineer sat straight up, eyes wide and said excitedly, "Wow, are you kidding?"
To that the interviewer replaied, "Yeah, but you started it!"
