Update- What Caused The Deaths Of 21 Polo Ponies In Wellington Florida

I wrote a post about the Polo pony tragedy right here in our town of Wellington Florida where during the U.S. Polo Open Tournament, Venezuelan Victor Vargas' team's polo ponies from the Lechuza Caracas ranch died suddenly.Victor Vargas lives in Palm Beach and Venezuela and is a banker in Venezuela.

The investigation is still ongoing however the preliminary results are in. A pharmaceutical company in Ocala Florida mixed the ingredients for a medication incorrectly. This is the cause of death of all 21 of the polo horses that happened suddenly right before the tournament. The strength of the medication was wrong.

The company did not discuss whose fault this was. It is either their wrongdoing by mixing the medication wrong by accident or it is someone from the Lechuza Caracas team ordering the wrong amounts. The horses died from hemorrhaging lungs.

It will take another week to complete all the toxology reports but this is what they know so far. The horses that received this treatment are the only ones that got sick and died within 3 hours of receiving the treatment. There are already fingers pointing to who ordered this medication. The attorney for the insurance company that insured 12 of the dead horses is also finding out who is at fault and who would be held liable for the deaths of the horses.

There was a comment made that one of the ingredients was Biodyl. Biodyl is banned from sale in the U.S. On rare occasions you can get a waiver from the government to get the ingredient. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's office, the US FDA and the Florida Department of Health are all investigating the tragedy.

Meanwhile the Wellington Community along with Darell Bowen, Mayor of Wellington and John Wash, President of operations for the International Plo Club Palm Beach held a memorial service on the Polo grounds. Hundreds of people showed up for the memorial service dropping carnations into the lake that is the backdrop of the polo matches. The Wellington Bag Pipers led the way of the march to the lake.

Marc Ganzi of the Audi team offered Vargas as many horses as Lechuza Caracas needed to keep competing in the tournament. Victor Vargas declined and told Ganzi to go win the tournament instead. This is a 'Gentlemen's Game' as it is known from Wellington to Southern Spain to France and Buenas Aires. There are a lot of rumors floating around about the polo ponies, their trainers and owners. None of it is true. They do not give their horses cocaine, they do not abuse their ponies or any other misguided speculative report you may hear.

The final US Open Polo Championship match is this Sunday. The U.S Open Polo Championships is like the Super Bowl or World Series for Polo players and their teams.

Katerina, I heard this story today. What a powerful mistake to affect so many nice animals. Sad.

That is so tragic. I adore horses and I hate to see any animal be hurt in this way. Let us hope it never happens again, and if there was any negligence or intentional harm towards the horses that those people are brought to justice. (Too bad animal cruelty laws are not as strict as they should be)

After raising horses for 22 years, I find it amazing that drugs are injected in all of them at the same time. Mine rarely got a shot of anything! Whatever happened to letting horses be natural? It sounds like a science project gone wrong.

I had heard on the news that the medicine cocktail that was mixed was not legal in the U.S.  This is so sad for everyone involved.  How horrible.

Lizette- There were polo ponies. Some give their vitamins in their feed while others give them injections. These horses are extremely valuable and expensive. The owners love these horses more than they love their dogs. They care for them as we care for our children, which is why I don't give my kids shots either:)

But there is no foul play here. Let me assure you, we know the polo community very well and they are not animal abusers.

Sorry to hear about those horses - sometimes natural causes can make a group of animals die mysteriously.  Blister beetles can infest hay in certain areas, and their bite is like strychnine to a horse.  Nobody knows the hay is infested until there are animals sick or dying.

What a horrible way to die and to lose a partner and that is exactly what these horses were to these polo players.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the equine sports industry would compete on the breeding and training of the animals and not pump this and that chemical into the animals for enhanced performance.

It was a slippery slope when the industry began to permit the first chemical into these magnificent athletes.

That goes for the human athletes too.

I don't even watch the Olympics any more.  All it does is disappoint when we find out later that the champions used this chemical or that.

Katerina,

This was and still is a very sad story.  I will be interested in hearing how all of this ends up.  The minute I saw this on the news I was thinking that it was in your area.

Really a shame what happened to those horses.  I still don't understand what Biodyl does and how.  Seems I can't find a good explanation online.

Tragic. There is no other word. I understand Polo horses have a really nice life. They work hard and play hard and this incident was an anomaly which hopefully wont happen again.

Katerina, Being an avid equestrian I have been following this tragic story. The medication was either improperly  prepared or an incorrect mix was given to the compounding pharmacy. It's such a terrible end for these beautiful, talented polo ponies.

The question is, why were 21 presumably healthy polo ponies ALL being given this medication anyway???
