foreclosure crisis by respresIt is said that the Chinese symbol for crisis contains elements of both danger and opportunity.  Over the past couple of years, we've all borne witness to a real estate market gone awry.

Nothing in my experience could have prepared me for the dramatic market downturn or the escalation in crisis sales which resulted at one point in one out of every ten homes in my county being at risk for foreclosure.

Yet, as I look back over this period, I'm struck by the fact that so many other worthwhile things may not have taken place or had the same impact in my life as they did precisely because of the moment of crisis.

For instance, over three years ago, I started blogging...almost by accident.  That first keystroke opened up my world of experience to include friends from across the nation and educational opportunities which have enhanced my professional skills.

This afternoon, I attended a Board of Directors meeting for our local board. During the meeting we were shown a video clip highlighting the new programs and opportunities that have emerged within the past year.  It was remarkable to reflect on how much has been accomplished inspite of very challenging odds. It's definitely not been easy, but I can't help but think that there would have been far less impetus to move forward in many critical areas apart from the stark realities which invaded our professional lives.

Now, change has not come without cost.  The membership of our Board decreased significantly as many agents found they could no longer make a living from selling homes.  Home listings soared even as home prices dipped to record low levels.  Agents discovered that amassing new skill sets (i.e. short sales) sometimes meant working harder for less pay.

While doing some research about the Chinese word for crisis, I was surprised to find out the the widespread meaning of the term is actually incorrect/incomplete. There are many nuances which are lost in translation. But one element which did provide additional insight for me is the concept of the symbol encompassing the idea of an incipient moment or a crucial point which can turn out for good or ill.

We're not completely out of the woods yet. Although there are signs of some light at the end of this tunnel, this moment does have within it the potential for good or ill.  In our market, there seems to be a stabilization and for the first time in a long while, house prices actually went up a tiny bit.  But...we're at a crossroads, a moment in time in which we hold in our hands the awesome responsibility of determining exactly how we will choose to move forward into the future.  Our capacity to exercise responsible leadership with integrity will make a crucial difference.

At the end of the day, we're in this thing together and the responsibility of making things work is not ultimately at the mercy of circumstances and situations.  That power resides within us and how we choose to respond to crisis, even when it requires us to snatch opportunity from the jaws of defeat.

Well said Lola.  I don't share your optimism, but I will work hard to help the market what ever it is.

Hello Lola, The article you reference in your post is really interesting - and almost laughable in the sense that so many people (most likely Westerners) have accepted the trendy explanation and (sadly) many may have made life-altering decisions based on that presumption.

Crisis is a negative thing, and we all know there may be silver linings in those clouds, but to the people whose parade was rained on, the silver lining is nowhere to be found.

It will take a LONG, LONG, LONG time for people and maybe our nation to recover from the CRISIS that we are slogging through. There are those few that are benefitting from the current conditions. Sorta like the pharmas in an epidemic.

You have a great attitude and outlook. The human spirit needs to have a positive focus, so keep on helping others see that light at the end of the tunnel!

Lola, love that double edge sword of danger and opportunity. One man's catastrophe is another man's golden opportunity.

Thank you for that clarification of the Chinese symbol for crises Lola.  I too hold out hope for the real estate market and our country as a whole.  If there's one thing that seems to be universal amongst Americans it is that we are eternal optimists.  Which may be the reason we get ourselves in trouble from time to time, ie. this housing crises.  Maybe if we all had a more tepid level of optimism we wouldn't have taken out those adjustable rate, no money down mortgages expeting, optimistically, that home prices would continue to rise and therefore we'd all be able to sell our homes at a profit should the need arise.  But alas reality set in.  Great post and best of luck to you.

So many people have left our industry yet there are so many people that are surviving and doing well.

It is optimism that keeps us sane at this time; that and a bit of humor.  My local Township was ranked #1 in Foreclosures for Marion County (Population nearly 900,000); some see that as a sad turn of events.  I see it as a great time to buy and refurbish the homes and create communities.

It is always a glass half full or half empty; it is always a choice.

The yin yang of our industry--everything feels wierd to those forced to change. To those who come later, it's just normal.

It's exciting to see buyers purchasing property in areas they could never have afforded without this correction.  It's devastating to see people lose their homes and jobs.  It is natural for an economy to have cycles of highs and lows.  The challenge is to survive and thrive during every cycle.  Such is life.

It is true, many Realtors have left, but there are still opportunities to be had.

Lola - the on-going market has, indeed, brought many changes in our business - how we must find business, how we must work, what training is needed, new forms and regulations and so much more.  Use of the Internet has mushroomed, and social media has become THE buzz word, and folks are engaging and sharing information in ways we could not have imagined a few years ago. Truly a time of amazing change, with much more ahead.

Lola, Very well said and much food for thought.  I think we all hope the economy and industry wiil recover.  With all the bad that has come there has been some good changes in this crisis and will hopefully protect us in another downturn so the bottom is not as deep.

Thanks,

Brian

Lola - I'm still holding my breath on what the final outcome will be of all the changes we've undergone over the past couple of years.  This year has been one of learning to survive and struggling through market changes I have never experienced before.  I've come this far and have no plans on turning back and look to see what new changes and opportunities lie ahead.

"Responsible leadership with integrity" ... I like that. Despite the challenges that today's market brings, people are still buying and selling homes. Our broker says this market isn't good or bad, just different. And a different market requires us to adapt our skillset and knowledge to best serve our clients.

Hi Lenn, I figure that working hard is one thing...something everyone can choose to do.  Working smart is even better.  In every economic situation someone will be making money, so I figure it might as well be you or I. :)

Pat, you are Lenn are right in noting that there is not going to be a 'quick' recovery.  It's taken us decades to land in this crisis.  However, the lessons we choose to learn can impact how or if we recover if we don't miss the moments of clarity which a crucial turning point can provide.

Gary, I had always thought in terms of that definition until I did some additional research and realized that is not really what the symbol is intended to communicate.  Although I would agree that within every challenge there lies an opportunity.

Jerry, I'm thinking there's a difference between optimism and sheer silliness.  The lending crisis was based largely on greed, not optimism.  Those who took advantage of others did not create opportunities, they laid the groundwork for a collapse.

Russ, True.  A crisis is rarely easy to walk through, but one does come out stronger in many cases.

Cindy, there's an African proverb that says, "If you you don't laugh, you will cry...so you might as well laugh."  The meaning harkens to the fact that sometimes situations are so dire, that finding the humor is the only way to maintain sanity and your bearings.

Linda...good point!

Norma...very true.  There are very few things in life which are purely black or white.

Deborah...absolutely.  There are also opportunities yet to be created. :)

Jeff, I think it's an exciting time to be in the business.  Exciting...but definitely not easy. :)

Lola:

Gosh you look like Michelle Obama.  I bet you hear that all the time.

I'm surprised at your optimism.  Michigan has been hit hard.  Opportunities are found where we look for them.  You are finding them because you are open to them.

Brian, I really enjoyed meeting you yesterday!  You are definitely someone who is focused on making the most of these crucial moments & I look forward to watching opportunities expand in your life and professional career.

Damon...these past few months have been a welcome relief.  Another African Proverb says:  "no condition is permanent in this world."  Fortunately that also includes bad conditions.

Donna...be encouraged.  You're a survivor.

John, you have a wise broker.  You're a fortunate agent. :)

Carole, Michigan has been hit hard, real hard...but we're still here.  And, it's still the place I'd most like to live. :)

Can I come to one of your BOD meetings with you and start a donut fight? :)

They're really fun. The donuts with holes in them fly right across a room like frisbees :)

Lola - Love your Westernization of the Chinese symbol Weiji.  But alas as always we Westerners have twisted an age-old language to suit our marketing needs.

See below and follow this link : http://pinyin.info/chinese/crisis.html

Chinese character wēi

Chinese character ji1 in simplified form 机

Laura, thanks for the link.  Your site references many of the same principles which are noted in the site linked to my blog posts about the errors in our Western understanding of this ancient principle.  The concept of 'incipient danger' is especially intriguing to me & differs dramatically from the commonly held notion of what the symbol means.
