That's a Chimney!

By
Home Inspector with JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC HOI 394

Aaah the life of a home inspector, it's never dull and often very interesting. The creativity, the innovativeness of people never will cease to fill me with wonder.

Like the other day I came around the corner of the house I was inspecting and wondered;

What in the world is that!

The blue tarp rather meticulously affixed to the bottom of the structure caught my eye first. Then I noticed the shaggy looking shingles. As my eye wander up the this strange vertical edifice it dawned on me what I was seeing,

By golly it's a chimney! And not a very good example of one at that.

To say this looks homemade would be to understate the obvious. This stack of assorted lumber haphazardly assembled screams amateur.

This chimney was probably assembled on a weekend with an Uncle and a couple of cousins helping. There would have been a barbecue and LOTS of beer before, during and after the project was undertaken.

Did I forget to mention the fireplace that this chimney was oh so methodically assembled to serve?

I actually was not to certain about the exact intended function of the "fireplace".

You can see how it has been decorated in a traditional hardware store bucket motif. I think the fan really makes it pop!

This "fireplace" must've been some new type of fancy home feature, the water fall fireplace. Can't build a fire in there, but the sound of dripping water must be oh so relaxing after a long day of work.

Aaah yes the life of a home inspector.

This falls under the heading of "The many uses of blue tarps." Whoever built this chimney was quite creative.

At least it looks like there is a hood of some type on top to help control the flow of the water fall. Very creative homeowner.

Hi James: Wow that was hilarious - would that be a fire hazard to use wooden shingles?  I thought they always used brick and stone for that reason.

Gerry, Never say never ;)

Keith, Yes I do see some strange and unusual things.

Al, I obviously missed that.

Daniel, I have seen many lined and unlined chimneys that are in various stages of collapse.

Andrea, Uncle Bob needs to take up a new hobby like stamp collecting.

Claudette, That sounds like a great title for a blog.

Frank, Yes there is and it has broken down.

Bill, Glad you didn't wake anyone :)

Karen, Sometimes you wonder if they are from the same planet.

Jared & Amanda, Yes it is!

Tom, My pleasure. New picture I see. Buzz has an iron grip.

Allen, Yes this one is unique.

Matt, The chimney is metal and inside the wooden structure. It's a very common method of chimney construction.

Kate, Why thank you. Glad you got my humor :)

James,

I once inspected one and realized I had not seen the fireplace termination on the roof. Surprise, it stopped in the attic.
