Earning a Short Sale and Foreclosure Resource Designation, and my thoughts about it!

It's been awhile since I've blogged in here, but, that certainly doesn't mean lack of enthusiasm or productivity. Quite the opposite!

License in hand, switching to an investor-oriented brokerage, and staying ahead of the curve have kept me very busy! I spent a day last week also earning my class room time as part of the SFR, aka the Short Sale and Foreclosure Resource designation through NAR.

Typically one to put more weight on my "street knowledge" over licenses and accredidations, nothing serves up a slice of humble pie with your holidays more than realizing that, everything that I specialize in, is now, TA-DA, "traditional" real estate.

So how do I feel about getting licensed, starting to earn designations, and adding some more letters behind my name? Quite proud, actually.

There are numerous firms, unlicensed "prowlers", and mere sales people out there preying on uneducated homeowners. I think carrying designations and being held to a recognized standard are things I am happy to add to over 7 years of hands on experience in foreclosures.

Now more than ever, adapting to the market, actively educating ourselves, and staying abreast of market and legal changes are going to propel the top people in our field through 2010 and beyond, while the others are still gathering around the water cooler, wondering what happened to the good ole' days of 2006.

I hope my conversion to a firm believer in non-traditional AND traditional education, in any sense, inspires other agents out there to keep investing in themselves through continuous learning as well!

"YES! Bank of America called us back! Now we can afford to buy more than one computer for the office!" ;)

To your success,

I used to get all the designations and I thing at one time I had twenty to twenty seven. That  being said you can specialize without a designation, the same way someone can sell there house without a licenses. I fyou practise and educate yourself long enough and be honest you can accomplish the same thing with or without.

HAve a license doesn't make you a good seller and having a designation doesn't make one an expert or even a good what ever. JMHO.

I have noticed that some of the short sale or foreclosure designations require a day in class & a fee.  Although its nice to have letters behind your name, I agree with Charles that the expertise can be obtained w/o it too.  I have sat in probably a dozen or more different short sale seminars in the past year or so trying to learn as much as I could & reading all I can get my hands on.  I still have not paid a fee for one of the designations, but feel I probably know as much or more than some who do.  So far I have been able to close the short sales I've listed, luck or skill I'm not sure which, or a combination.  But with more agents getting these designations, I suppose I'll have to pay up & get one here soon, just to compete.  Good luck, I know your company is very active & busy in this arena.

Yep, coming from someone who's been in the trenches for over 7 years, definetely was hesitant to pay money to get this designation. But, all in all, experience + accredited designations can't hurt. Thanks for the comments!
