Kauai bans handheld cell phones while driving

By
Real Estate Agent with Inactive INACTIVE HI Lic# RB-20941

Kauai has joined the island of Oahu by passing an ordinance banning use of handheld electronics while driving.  The Oahu ordinance is already in effect and Kauai's will begin on May 3.  The Kauai mayor has promised to sign the bill when it arrives at his desk.

It's not yet clear what steps the county will take to notify arriving tourists which make up a significant number of our drivers.  That may not be a big issue since bans are being enacted in many areas of the mainland and the car rental companies should notify it's drivers.

Come visit and drive safe!

Aloha!

Here in California we have these laws and some even follow them.  Such a great law, scares me to death when I see people texting while driving.

Texting while driving has to be the worst, right up there with driving with one's eyes closed.

First the Big Island, then Oahu now Kauai....What's this all about, safety?  I'm sure that it will result in a decrease in automobile accidents.  BTW, are hands free devices ok?

Ah, I wasn't yet aware that the Big Island had it, thanks for that info.  The bill is new and even the mayor hasn't seen it so I don't know details on hands-free.

Uh oh, I suppose Maui will be next.  What about eating while driving, can I still do that?

Hi Georgina.  You keep so trim that I don't think you would eat and drive anyway.

Ann--After moving from the midwest, I spent 35 years in Maryland.  Both are very snowy these days!

I think the roads are safer that way.  I visited my family at Christmas time.  They live in the Chicago area.  All of Cook county is hands free.

Hi Dawn.  It's becomming the norm for sure.  Do you think hands-free eliminates the danger or is there still a distraction?

Hi Richard:

I do think that it's a good law.

I hope they put a National ban on the darn things and I can then save the monthly bill. With all the distractions we have in our cars I am suprised people don't have more wrecks.
