For months, there's been a lot of excitement swirling around Edmond, Oklahoma in anticipation of the new Centennial Elementary school. The addition of this school brings the total number of Edmond Public elementary schools to 16! See below for a complete list of Edmond elementary schools.

For someone like me, who's been around Edmond for so many years, it's amazing to see that our community has grown so much that there's a need for 16 elementary schools! As a teenager, I lived in NW Oklahoma City and attended Putnam City North High School. I had several friends in Edmond, so I spent a lot of time here. Back then, we spent many of our Friday and Saturday nights "cruising" up & down Broadway, which was the main strip of the entire city (I know, I'm really dating myself with this post). Fun times. The only McDonald's in Edmond was on Broadway between 2nd & 15th streets (now there are 11 that come to mind), and Broadway Extension had not yet been built. You'd find teenagers from all over central Oklahoma packing both sides of Broadway, hanging out, blasting music and just having a great time in general. They eventually put a stop to that as I guess it started to get out of hand.

I don't know what the true population of the city was back then, but I know it was only about 10-15% of the now 76,000+ residents who call Edmond home. In those days, there was only one high school; now there are three (Edmond Memorial, Edmond North, and Edmond Santa Fe). Through all of the years and tremendous growth, Edmond Public Schools still rank in the tops of public school systems nationally. That's something we take great pride in here in Edmond. In fact, it's the primary reason that many of us moved here in the first place. It's a commuter town, a family town. I moved to Edmond back in 1999 to make sure my son and daughter were able to benefit from a great primary education and haven't once regretted it. Edmond is now home to us and we love it here. What a great place to raise our kids!

Did you know that Edmond is home to the first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory? It was built just west of the corner of 2nd & Boulevard in July of 1889.

So, with the opening of Centennial Elementary school (located at 4400 N Coltrane) this fall, we celebrate Edmond's continued growth and commitment to education. Here's to many more years of success within the boundaries of Edmond, Oklahoma.
