Volcano - Another Mother Lode Treasure Trove

Volcano, California by Myrl Jeffcoat

After visiting Daffodil Hill a few days back, with a daughter and three granddaughters, we literally fell into the little town of Volcano - 2 miles away.

Volcano (Formerly Soldier's Gulch) is another of those little Gold Rush gems, which provides rich color to the Wild West era tapestry.   It is considered by many to be one of the most picturesque of the Mother Lode towns.

Dating back in history to the late 1850s, the town was originally nicknamed "Crater City."  Early miners noticed the lay of the land was a bowl-shaped valley, which caused them to believe it was formed by a volcano.

There is a story that in 1849 one miner took out 8 thousand dollars worth of gold in a few days - that was in 1849 dollars.  Another got 28 pounds in a single pocket.

Volcano boasts that it is home to California's first amateur theatrical company.  This theatre tradition continues to this day.  The town has an outdoor amphitheatre, and the Volcano Theatre Company, which stages performances at various times during the year.

Once the largest settlement in Amador County, Volcano now has a population of a mere 101 souls.  In its heyday, the town boasted 3 breweries, 17 hotels, 37 saloons and a great deal of gold.

Volcano is also only a few miles from Indian Grinding Rock State Park a very worthwhile Amador County attraction.

For more detailed history on Volcano you can visit Volcano's AmadorGold webpage

Directions to Volcano from Sacramento: Take Highway 16 through Sloughhouse, and on until you reach Highway 49 toward Jackson (travels through Dry Town, Amador City, and Jackson).  Take the Highway 88 turnoff toward Lake Tahoe.  Turn left on Pine Grove-Volcano Road.  The settlement is about 3 miles from Highway 88.  Mileage is about 50 miles from Sacramento to Volcano.

Toula - It was a stunning day!  We couldn't have planned it betterm because it is raining again here today!

Andrea - You live in a very special part of the country too!  And I feel fortunate to be able to visit via your photos.

Karen - Thank you Kind Lady!

Elizabeth - You could do Daffodil Hill, Volcano and Indian Grinding Rock in a day!  They are close together.  Of course you would need to wait until next year, if you want to take in Daffodil Hill.  They are closed for the season.

Fred - I understand there is more gold in the hills than ever came out!

Paul - And just think, you didn't need to board a flight or go through security:-)

Melanie - Thank you for your kind words.

Maria - It is well cared for as a historic town.

Tony and Darcy - We have a herd of these little towns.  And we are beginning to treasure and care for them more and more.

Debi - It really "feels" great when you are there too!

All - I'm blushing bright red while posting this; but I also need to mention there was another enterprise that flourished in Amador County.   The photo below is of the plaque displayed at the Amador County Historic Society in Jackson.  The Inscription reads as follows:

Botilleas Bordellos

World's oldest profession
flourished 50 yds east of
this plaque for many years
Until this most perfect
example of free enterprise
was padlocked by
unsympathetic
politicians

E.R.E.C.T.I.O.N.S

Hi Myrl, Your photos are just gorgeous, I feel like I got to go to Volcano too! About the plaque,  I was reading an old newspaper article about Fort Collins history, in the olden days there were a lot of "saloons and brothers"  I'm pretty sure brothers was a typo :-)

Mary - I will never forget when my kids were young, we went to Reno for a swim meet.  My son, who was about six at the time became very agitated when we wouldn't buy him a book that he thought was titled, "The Brothers of Nevada".   So I know EXACTLY what you are talking about!

Hi Myrl, I have been here at this post 3 times , tried to leave a comment and repeatedly they failed to register. The photos are so wonderful and I love these small towns and all the early history about how they came to be. But what is really being missed by many is that you bring so much of these rich areas to life with your Photoblogs. You live in a area of CA that is so rich in history as many other parts of CA are. But repeatedly you bring fresh new and exciting things to learn about and be able to visualize them through your wonderful photography. If noticed, and I know you have, I  am trying to emulate your efforts  here in San Diego.

Now, I have been around many of the blogging networks for a few years and we can read that the market is doing this or that  but what so many miss is that they don't share with consumers who are thinking of coming to CA, the rich and wonderful and colorful history that awaits them.

It is this very history and the efforts to preserve these marvelous places of this state's rich past that adds so much to the value of living here. The local community web sites focus on commerce and the Internet is loaded with the history, if you know enough to be able to name what it is you are looking for. But your blogs consistently provide the not always apparent history of out of the way places and the marvel of the real beauty of both the land and the historical point of view.

Your posts just totally delight me and inspire me to do as well.

Hi Myrl...Wonderful pictures.  They really convey a sense of what this community was like at one time.  I love all the stone.  How wonderful to have something like this available when they were building.  Looks like they struck gold in more ways than one.  And so did you.
