Is your business conditional or unconditional?

Hello all: I hope you're enjoying your day!

At The Legacy Group, a lot of us loan officers have been meeting every Thursday with our President to learn about how we can thrive in this challenging time. Let's face it. Loan volume is expected to be 40% less than last year; it's now officially a purchase market as opposed to a refi. one like we had last year.

That brings up the interesting question my boss posed today. "Is your business conditional or unconditional?" What do I mean by that? If you're like me, I would hazard to guess that most of our outlook is conditional. I hate to admit that but most of the relationships I have with realtors, etc. are based on closing something, etc. for them where they get paid. My boss was arguing this is a conditional deal. Although I disagreed with him a bit, I see his point. What he was arguing is when was the last time you (or I for that matter) entered a relationship because we had spent the time supporting the other person's cause, etc. etc. with no expectation back? For a great read on this topic, I suggest you pick up a copy of "The Go-Giver".

Again, my boss's message today was to connect and encourage. I agree with this. In fact, I'm going to remind myself again to be unconditional in my focus. I urge you also to examine your business. I know we need to eat and pay the bills but this is the time to take it to the next level. I invite you to share your stories about you being unconditional. Have a great day!

I get up every morning not knowing what to expect. I only know that I have a chance to contribute again. On that note, I look forward to whatever happens knowing that things happen for a reason. I leave out all my analytical powers and rely more on common sense and good will. Surprisingly, the rest comes in due time and every one gets what they deserve. So, I suppose you can call this UNCONDITIONAL?....Thank you

Paul - Good post and very interesting.  I guess this is why I don't actively pursue Realtor's as referral partners because most of them only want a conditional relationship with me.  Most all of them only care about is what's in it for them or how many referrals am I going to give them.

The few Realtors I work with, I actually refer to as friends because we actually like each outside of business.  We socialize with each other and our spouses and we actually care about each regardless of how much business we refer each other.  We actually talk to each other about other things besides real estate and mortgage loans.

I'd like to think that this is an unconditional relationship because I would like them even if they didn't give me business and I believe that the feelings are mutual.  I'd be curious to know if there are other LO's and Realtors that have that kind of relationship.

Donne: Thank you! I too have unconditional relationships with my referral partners. Not necessarily in every case but it's nice when there are no expectations whatsoever! Have a great weekend!

Richie: I agree with you. It's all about expectation and outlook. That being said, I think it's important for all of us to look for ways to encourage others with nothing expected in return. Take care.

Paul, Great post. I love the definition of unconditional - Carries the true meaning of giving back.
