Fixing a Hole

By

I'm sure most everyone remembers the late great Billy Mays, the TV pitchman who hawked so many different products in his loud and unforgettable voice. One of the most recognizable of these products has to be Mighty Putty the versatile fix all wonder epoxy clay. One of the great uses for Mighty Putty, as Billy would demonstrate, was repairing plumbing leaks.

Yes sir, you just pull a little Mighty Putty off the stick, put it right on the leak and Presto! The leak is plugged and permanently fixed.

While looking under the kitchen sink during an inspection the other day I spied what looked like the infamous Might Putty on the drain pipe. The water was running in the sink above and examining the pipe there were no leaks to be found.

Wow, I thought, that stuff must be the real deal. That was until something else caught my eye lying on the bottom of the sink cabinet.FIX-it-STICK

FIX-it-STICK

Could this be a cheap knock off of the one and only Mighty Putty? It would seem that FIX-it-STICK is just that, an imitation, but with a focus on plumbing repair.

Call me crazy, but to me gobbing putty onto a leak seems like putting a band aid on a large gash. It may stop the bleeding temporarily, but it hasn't repaired the wound.

Of course there is another alternative when Mighty Putty or FIX-it-STICK may not be right for the job which I also happened to find in the same house.

Drip catcherA paint can hung under the leak works great too.

My advice; call a plumber and leave the putty for the kids.

Like you said, using Mighty Putty and Fix-It-Stick are like putting band-aids on a gash.

Fix it right and be done with it, especially when it comes to plumbing leaks.

James, I guess when money is tight these are the alternatives to paying a plumber's fee.  Like the hanging can, better than tripping over a pot on the floor.

James: Great post- I suppose it might not be a bad idea to have something like the putty around as a temporary stop-gap until a plumber can show up, but I think you are correct that it's better to permanently fix problems rather than temporarily fix them.  Thanks for sharing!

"Died in the wool" do-it-yourselfers will always try to make a repair by themselves before resorting to actually calling-in the pros.  That would be admitting defeat!  I'm at that stage of life where I call the pros right away because I know I'll screw-up the job somehow, and it'll end-up costing me more money if I attempt my own repair.

Joan, I think you should find a plumber instead :)

John, Unfortunately no leaks, no foul. The buyer will be fixing it right.

Craig, There's nothing like a good leak to ruin part of the house, so just fix it right.

Gloria, That is a very good point and was probably true to some degree for the folks that own this home.

David, Temporary to often turns into permanent, but I do agree with you.

Charlie, I have lots of Play Doh around my house....sometimes I even share it with my kids :)

Michael, Plumbers putty looks a lot like Silly Putty. Hmmmmmmm :)

Michael, Thanks for the reblog.

Tom, Great point when you said: "it'll end-up costing me more money if I attempt my own repair" You obviously have the wisdom of experience :)

Richard, Good promotional gimmick! You may have a future in advertising.

Andrea, Have I taught you nothing :( Caulk, the other duct tape. :o

Billy Jays, A satisfactory alternative, but FIX-it-STICK rules!

Mr Q,

In my reports I would typically recommend a double application of duct tape, then coated with epoxy. Then staple a paper plate on that. Works quite good.
