So now you are a Blogger on Active Rain!  You create content, you write, you post, you read, you comment, but do you ever wonder...where does my Blogging go from here?  Is this as good as it gets?  Should I have more than one Blog?  My answer to you is yes!  Every single person and panelists that I met in San Francisco at the Real Estate Connect last week, ALL had a Blog or write for a Blog outside of Active Rain.  Don't get me wrong, I think that Blogging in the rain is great, in fact I will always be an Active Rain Alumni, but eventually, you should consider a Blog out in the Blogosphere too.

Have you noticed that many of the Active Rain writers and Bloggers all have their own personal Blogs too?  The reason I keep coming back to Active Rain is for the SEO, the relationships and the comments, among many other reasons which I'll share with you in a moment.  I have to say, writing 10 posts on my outside Blog with 0 comments the first month, can get lonely and depressing after a while.  I have experienced this with some of my personal Blogs using blogger.com and wordpress.com  (there are many more FREE ones out there), but I love coming back to the "rain" after being out in the desert!  LOL!

Here's my advice to you.
Spend your first few months, or whatever time it takes, just getting around and understanding how to Blog using Active Rain as your platform / forum to do things like:

  • Find your voice  (The Big Secret: it's the one you use everyday, just be yourself)
  • Learn the ins-and-outs of Blogging
  • Meet others to build and grow your business relationships and national network
  • Understand how to create a layout for your Blog and your posts or articles
  • Decide what look, feel, and design you want to deliver to your audience
  • Get advice from the many pros, and learn, learn, learn!

All this and so much more is available to you right here on Active Rain!

Then you can venture out somewhere, and start your own Blogging voice in the Blogosphere Galaxy!  There are some things about Blogging that no one can teach you, you just have to learn by trial and error.  It takes time, patience, persistence, and a commitment!  It takes YOU to just do it!  Trust me, you will find your way if you're determined.  Voice the things you are most passionate about, not just things and topics that create value, but write to create relationships.  That's what blogging is truly all about, and the unmeasurable value that it brings.

If you are part of the Real Estate Industry, and you are a Blogger, you are way ahead of your competition!  But one day, Blogging may just be another "tool-box standard" of doing business like having a website, a cell phone, GPS or a laptop!  What about the future expectations from the Internet savy consumers?  Will they be on your Blog, or on someone else's?  Do you have a plan?  Are you finding your voice and learning how to write to YOUR audience?  Take the time to really understand what it is that you are doing and what your intentions are as a Blogger.  Take it serious but have fun too.  Creating a great Blog is really no different than creating a great business plan!  Put in the time and the effort.

Active Rain is the ultimate place to begin your Blogging journey.  It is the fastest and most powerful start-up support network in the industry.  There is no place on the internet or on the planet for that matter, that you can get this type of support and information.  Just take a look at some of these Blogs by your fellow Active Rain Members and Colleagues.  These are some great Blogs from some very successful professionals in the Real Estate Industry.

SAMPLES OF SOME EXTRAORDINARY BLOGS!
(selected at random - sorry if I missed yours)

Laurie Manny , Gena Reide , Cyndee Haydon , Mark Flanders ,  Colleen Kulikowski , Roberta Murphy , Maureen McCabe , Jeff Turner , Brian Brady , Kristal Kraft , Kaye Thomas , Teresa Boardman , Linda Davis , Rich Jacobson did you view these Blogs?  See what I mean?  I hope this helps you determine your Blogs future...

Blogging is FREE promotion and advertising no matter what part of the Real Estate Industry you are in!  It adds $0.00 dollars to your marketing campaign and budget, yet it can add thousands to your Profits.  Basically, you are creating an on-line office that allows you to interact with other industry professionals and consumers, but on a National level.  It makes (cents) to me why anyone would want to Blog and have more than one!!

Nice post, Brad. Blogging is great for all the reasons you pointed out ( I bookmarked this so I can read it again later this week) and tons more.

The problem is finding the time...it is all I can do to post regularly to my AR blog, let alone my three outside blogs....especially since I can no longer copy and paste the same post to multiple blogs due to google penalizing my AR blog.

hmmm

Excellent advice Brad.  This is exactly how I started- testing the waters on Active Rain, and then with my own blog.  The more I post (on both!) the easier it gets.  As I have said before, I would rather be an earlier adopter and have an established blog when everyone starts doing it!

I agree completly. Dont forget as well to read each others blogs. We can all benefit from each other. I actually did the opposite, blogger first, then active rain. I find myself more well read though since I've joined here.

GREAT post.  Not just a good post.  I have a few active blogs now.  Some have overlapping content, but it is also good to target to various audiences a little bit.

Now to get my voice heard more outside of here...

I started another blog but am stymied as to what to do for content...I just can't seem to find enough to say! I need to make it different so I want to go do it. But, not so different that I can't just "do it"

David and Kristen - wonderful is putting it mildly!  :-)

Jo- Anne - Thanks. You're right, time is an issue. See what others have to say about that in a post I wrote last week: http://activerain.com/blogsview/165913/My-First-Listing-From

Lloyd - I'm with you 100%. Thanks for your comment! Maureen does ROCK!

Ginger - you are so right...again.  I agree, the early bird gets the worm and the desert too!  LOL!

Missy - I have seen your outside blog and I am sorry I didn't include it on this post. The fact is, there are so many that blog outside AR, I wanted the new members to know what they are striving for.  There are just too many to list in this post.  BTW - I love your blog!!

Stephen - that's exactly why I made the comment about coming back to the "rain".  Your outside blog can get very lonely without any interaction. I love active rain and I'm proud to be a part of the AR Alumni!  LOL!

Lane - it takes time, patience and a huge commitment.  You will never get the amount of comments you get here on AR, but you will get business either way. Stay committed, stay focused, and stay in both places. It works!!  :-)

Joan - I understand.  I am still learning and not yet ready to go full-force into an outside blog. I toy with my photography blog, and my music blog, but have not yet found where I am going to give 110 percent. I am in the same boat as you.  In time, I know we will have a light go on in our minds, and when it does, nothing will get in our way of just "doing it"!

Carol - I know the lead dog thing and about the view from 2nd place.  As long as the addiction is profitable (and legal) it's great!  Having comments is nice, but it's the relationships I find that are most addicting. Some of the greatest people I know were met here on AR, and I have only been a member since Feb this year!

Cyndee - you're welcome. Your blog was worthy and I am glad others can now see beyond the "rain" and "clouds".  Active Rain is my home as it is to many others, but we must all venture out into the world at some point, even with our blogs!  Thanks for your comment and all your great posts!

Excellent, excellent, excellent, Brad, a 5 and a feature flag from me!!!!

I have only been on AR for a month and it has changed my business life immensely, I am not spending any more marketing money, only my time that I cannot use with a client anyway (why, because it's after 11:30 now and sometimes I am up till 3AM or later, as a lot of you are, Brad!) Since then, I have received over 1,000 hits on my business site! I did nothing else different, besides AR. How much money would these so called SEO experts charge me for that?? And I would have been happy to pay on those results! I am the biggest AR cheerleader in my office, but so few are taking me seriously! I will keep preaching because I want to help them, they are struggling so right now.

Have I made any money yet, no, but it is way too early for that, but, I WILL! Like Brad suggests, blog elsewhere.....I have started really using My Space, Face Book, my own Real Living blog and several others. Like Brad said, it gets a little lonely...but it only takes a few to tune in and it is all worth it, one commission and I am way ahead. What? I could be watching TV or the back of my eyelids right now? Besides I am having fun and making wonderful online friends. (This actually "pumps me up" as Brad's governor used to say. hehehe.)

You cannot take this new wave of the future too seriously. This is the new way for our success. (Why do you think that the people running for PRESIDENT of the United States, showed up at a blogging convention and debated a few days ago!)

I wish you all a great night blogging and I look forward to reading all of your great ideas! ( and copping a few, haha)

I am out!  DavidC

I'm blown away when I see other realtors refusing to blog.  I do have another blog site, but don't post to it as much as I do AR.  I stay here because of the SEO.  You've shown me new tools too, just looking at your posts.  Thanks so much!

David - Thanks for the POST on my POST! LOL!  You express yourself well for other readers and I am sure that you will be very successful from all your efforts inside and outside Active Rain.  It's great to see you having fun and yet seeing the value and importance of your blogging efforts.  One day, the agents in your office will either be gone, or looking to you as their leader for help with their blogs and technology.  Just do what you do and don't worry about who is willing to receive or reject your support and information.  You have come a long way in the last month and with the effort and time you are putting into it, you will go far in the Blogosphere!!  Lastly - you're gonna have to stop taking those No-Dose and drinking so much coffee.  Blogging till 3 am. is unacceptable!! LOL!

Warmest Regards David C - Wolfgang is...Over and Out! :-)

Kay - I don't get it either. Maybe that's why only 10% of the agents do 90% of the business, at least that's the rumor!!  Just so you know, your other Blog will get you SEO too, but it takes time to build and develop readership.  AR is the best place on earth to learn, grow, build readership, and then apply it to your outside blog!  When I graduate from Active Rain, I hope to create the "Greatest Blog On Earth"!  That's what I am hoping to acheive from all my efforts here on the rain. I am still trying to do all the things you read in my post above. Now I just have to stop saying....someday!!  :-)  Thanks for your wonderful comment Kay, I'm off to check out your blog now!

Brad, Thank You so much for your advice.  I have checked around and AR is the most active blogging network for our industry. You are absolutely right about blogging becoming a "tool standard".  Why else would realtor.com and similar companies start setting up blogs in their systems?

Thank you very much for the mention Brad.  The other blog is a lot of work, lots of hours go into that, but it is well worth it.  The leads are coming in now, mostly from the other blog.  They were dribbling in until lead generation tools were added.  There is more to having a successful blog than just setting it up and writing.

You are right, ActiveRain is a great place to learn.  The trick is to make choices on what you need as opposed to what you want.  The fun stuff is great, but the meat is what counts.  SEO SEO SEO SEO!  The new leads come from the search engines, optimization is critical.

Great post Brad, I to have been thinking about another blog, well actually I do have a different blog attached to my web site but I have been wanting to write a blog on a different topic other than real estate.

So I am learning the ropes here and trying to improve my web presence in real estate here on the rain and I must admit I am growing more confident with each post and oh boy do I learn a ton of stuff here each week thanks to great people like you who so willingly share their knowledge.  Thanks.

You're definitely right, Brad, that blogging is an evolution.  After all, we didn't learn this stuff in high school, did we?

We offer our website clients a blog module that is so simple it would make rainers laugh, but it's a place to start.  And you know what?  Clients often buy the module and don't even put up the first post!  Hats off to those that just get started and hats off to you for encouraging the starters to keep growing.

Lanre - there are many FREE sites that let you create a blog, you can also add one to your website, I  chose those two because they were the first that came to mind, as they are both very popular. Good Luck!

David - no I don't mind sharing it, so much has been shared with me over time, I love to pay it forward!

Ryan - I agree with you, it's just the beginning of New Age Real Estate. Web 2.0 is here to stay!

Kaushik - sounds like you're on the right track! Good job, stay committed!  :-)

Thesa - I figured you did...you are one sharp cookie!  Do you blog outside the rain too?

Marie - we are fortunate to have AR as a stepping stone into this new age of marketing. We are the pioneers of a new and exciting ERA of web 2.0 inter-active communication.  We are the ones creating the motivation for all the other companies you mention to start their blogs.  I'm proud to be a pioneer in these great times of technology and Real Estate.

Maureen - I know that wasn't your main Blog, I just wanted to show how many of the "Great" Bloggers like yourself are actually featured or write for other Blogs too.  There you have it, so popular that you have stuff everywhere on the net and don't even know it's there.  I truly have a great respect and look up to you as a "master" in blogging.  You and the others have paved and plowed the way for the rest of us.  Now we are plowing the fields for the rest of the industry. You should be very proud of your accomplishments, we sure are!  Thanks Maureen for all you do in the industry, your community, and for members here on AR!  :-)

Duane - I have not yet heard of eBlog, but I am heading there now to check it out.  That's what I love about AR, where else can someone gather this kind of information sharing so easily?  Good luck to you and thanks for sharing in your comments.  Those are the best types of comments you can leave on another members post.  Blogging is really about sharing and not always consuming. Thanks Duane, appreciated!!

Great post.. we have many different blogs.. but Active Rain and http://blog.britishhomesgroup.com are our main ones, our blog.britishhomesgroup.com was built by Real Estate Blogsites of http://www.realestateblogsites.com they are a great company who have built a custom platform for us.. if anyone is considering another blog you should consider a custom platform rather than a free blog - their blogging platform is built for the search engines and is therefore search engine friendly!! Check out our blog too!

Todd and Danielle- I think you'll be impressed with many of these blogs that have been created.  They say if you want to be better, you have to find the "best" mentors and coaches. These folks are some great bloggers and provide an awesome guideline to help you be the best you can be.  Check them out, I think you'll agree, their success is evident in their blogs!!

Darrel - you are definitely on the right track!!  There is so much to learn, but it can all be obtained here on the rain, at least to start.  With every post, you will begin to find your voice and your audience, it get's easier, but your focus on results is key.  I enjoy sharing with others because I love to get comments just like yours.  The rewards are great, and the process is fun!  Best of luck to you in all your website and blogging endeavors!  B-)

Neal- you will find time if you just preview some of the blogs I put in this post.  Once you see how others are utilizing the outside sphere, you will be much more motivated and inspired to do so.  Not that you aren't now, but then you'll really be "The Real Deal". :-)

Cyndee - thanks, and yes, Laurie's words of wisdom are the key to successful blogging as she has demonstrated by her efforts.  Laurie really knows her stuff, and is a great resource to me, as are you! :-)

Darlene, I have invited hundreds of agents and affiliates and only have 105 takers.  Do not be discouraged, you are right, shame on you if they don't come, but shame on you if you don't make them aware. That's all you can do.  Take advantage of being out in front of your colleagues, and make the best of your time being ahead of the rest.  It won't always be that way, I assure you.  :-)

Tracy - when I was in high school, we didn't have cell phones, fax machines, Internet, microwaves, GPS or even a Starbucks let alone the concept of Blogging.  I guess I just dated myself huh? :-)  BTW - hats off to YOU for your contributions to the success of the Real Estate community as well. Oh BTW - glad you like the photos, they were appropriate for this post. B-)

Rebecca- it has been recommended by many that you DO NOTduplicate your blog.  It has something to do with google cancelling you out of the SEO or something like that.  You can do a "search" here on AR and find all kinds of posts regarding duplicate blogs.  You can duplicate, but you might want to look into the ramifications of it first.

Lisa and Robert- my musical friends, thanks for your comment. I understand exactly what you are saying, but if you review the blogs of the other members in this post, somehow it will make you stop and think about why you are doing this anyway.  Are you blogging for comments?  Are you addicted to the great relationships?  Is it the google juice and SEO?  All are great reasons to say yes, but AR owns your blog, not you.  I think doing both is critical to your RE success.  The key question is, are you blogging to do more business?  If so, then I would consider outside blogging and find the time to make your outside blog as successful as your AR blog.

BTW - Mirror Mirror on the wall, was a great post on your outside blog! Great Job!!  B-)

I would also like to promote and endorse The Real Estate TomatoJim Croninis awesome!!!  They offer blogs, coaching, support, SEO friendly, and experience...for a fee of course, and if I had the money and time to invest, that's who I'd use.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom.... it hasn't been that long (maybe a month or so) that I got involved in AR.  I agree it's great place to learn BIG TIME...

Brad - Great post. Have another blog but find that the benefits of Active Rain far out way the time investing in the personal blog at the moment. I love the license plate! Is that really yours? I was also wondering where you got the little guy that waves? It sure is eye catching.

Linda - your blog is beautiful!!!  Thanks for allowing me to share it in this post!  AR is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to learn about blogging.  I think only 15-20% of all these members actually blog here.

Thanks for subscribing to my blog. I'll try not to let you down as my blog matures!  LOL!  :-)

Monica - Congrats on making it your first month.  There is so much to learn here, you can set your own pace and grow as fast or as slow as you like.  I have been here since Feb 29th, 2007 and have learned so much from other members.  I am not an Agent, so I do have a different audience than most.  I do not do consumer direct marketing as Agents and Lenders are my clients. However, I have received numerous referrals from Active Rain and have seen contracts created and signed due to some of my posts.  I hope you'll find that your efforts blogging here as well as outside the rain will bring you some great leads, and help you build some fantastic relationships.  :-)

Interesting post, Brad.  I posted on the same subject a little while back and got some great answers to the big question.  I'll need to chew on this awhile - the work to blog seems a bit daunting.

Brad, I believe I have found my blogging voice since being here. I have 2 other blogs but they didn't even get a comment. It's sad out there in the desert! I have in my plans to write a book or two. this has given me a chance to write more and expand my small world. Plus your blog is fun to comment on!

Jeff - daunting is a word that is putting it mildly, but email, cell phones, technology are all daunting, just like mowing the lawn, doing dishes and paying bills! LOL! We still have to do those things too, or we have stress in our lives.  Somehow, we just find the time!!  I think Blogs will find their way into our lives and become a day to day task just like all the other action items on our daily lists!  B-)

Lizette - you have found your voice, now go yell it from the mountain top!!  I am looking forward to your book someday, I too am planning on producing a book soon, maybe I'll just print out my blog and all the comments and put a hard cover on it and sell it on Amazon.com for $9.95.  LOL!!  Thanks for always coming by and having fun here on "The Escrow Guy's" Blog.  Your comments, humor and presence are always welcomed!!  B-)

Brad ~ Thanks for the mention!  What you say is so very correct.  Hanging around in the rain won't get you as much mileage as blogging in the real world...

Oh, I agree about blogs.  But maintaining two?  That could be unnecessary - hence my reluctance.

Jeff - Kinda like having 2 cars I guess....maybe not!  LOL!!  Just remember, everything in Active Rain, is Active Rains!  What you do on your own, is your own.  I Love AR, but we all have to keep growing or they say we begin dying.  Not us my friend, we have a long way to go and a lot to accomplish between now and then, so get out there and make a BLOG!  HAVE FUN DOING IT TOO!!  :-))

Brad, LOL - that image is hilarious!  Where did you find him?  I know a lot of two finger typists than can type so much faster than me!  So I cannot judge a typist by his style.

Brad, this post just goes to show what a really valuable post should be- you continue to learn from it even as the time goes on. I read this post in my 1st AR day and it was very informative. Now, 1 week into it, I re-read and it just means a lot more. And all your images... I need a lot more to learn. Thanks. You get my 5, for whatever that means (do you get a grade at the end of the week? LOL)

Faina - sometimes a post brings even more value as time goes on, but it comes from the comments too. Some of the better posts create threads of great information and comments.  Thanks for the 5 and for your wonderful comments on my blog.  Not sure if there is a grade, but comments like yours make it the best grade one can get!!  Thanks!!  ;-)

Amazing advice Brad. I agree and am seeing these principles starting to work in my own little world. Especially the point you made about "Your Voice" being "Your Voice". The best person to be is yourself, and by doing that I believe that you attract the kind of people that you can work the best with...and this makes EVERYTHING easier!

Chris - I don't think I said it any better that you!!  You are so correct about your voice!  No need to look for something you already have built in.  We just have to learn to not be afraid of our own voice and shadow.  Great comment and observation. Thanks for sharing that.  You will do well, because you understand half the battle!! Thanks!

Brad,

Thanks for the suggestion on having an outside blog.  I had an outside blog before coming to active rain, and have found that active rain definitely seems to provide more google juice.  What would you suggest as far as how to differentiate content on AR versus on the personal blog.  Do I duplicate all content, some content, or write completely unique articles on each blog? :)

I'd love your feedback.  Thanks for all you do here, I have received a ton of great info from many of your other posts as well.

Emily - I always suggest unique content for your various Blogs, but duplicate content isn't bad in certain cases.  It really depends on the audience for each Blog.  AR Blogs could be for Industry stuff, Outside Blog for specialty and custom trades, and Localism for Local and neighborhood info.  I have multiple Blogs and sites, but each are unique without duplicating content.
