Chinese Garden at the Huntington | Feng Shui in Your Garden

Chinese Garden at the Huntington

The biggest difference between Chinese Gardens and any other types of garden influence is that the Chinese Garden is actually built and not just planted.
True Chinese gardens can incorporate various elements consisting of pavilions, courtyards, bridges, rocks, plants and trees, pathways and water.

The plant palette is subtle but elegant. Bamboo, Pine, Lotus, Plum and Chrysanthemum are the most celebrated plants in Chinese Art and Literature. But certainly Chinese gardens are not limited to these varieties.

The Chinese garden is about " seeing" and is a sanctuary for solitary or social contemplation about nature.

Water which symbolizes that life is ever changing and  can be used in ponds, waterfalls or natural fountains which would most often incorporate rocks , representing the Eternal. The natural harmony of these elements enhance in the " Seeing" the garden. "Seeing" must be explained that it is not about just something you do with your eyes but what you do with all your senses for creating inner peace, harmony and tranquility.

These photos were taken this past weekend at the Huntington in their Liu Fang Yuan Garden or it's English interpretation of "The Garden of the Flowering Fragrance".

This garden was designed by Chinese artisans for the Huntington and is currently being expanded. This most magnificent  and significant garden is a true Chinese Garden in every sense of the word.

The Four Seasons are clearly represented  through the varieties of Pine Trees and Black Bamboo, representing Winter. The Peony and Peach blossoms for Spring. Summer is represented by the most important flower  of all found in Chinese Art and Literature, the Lotus. The fall will see the celebrated chrysanthemums in profusion.

There can be no doubt that " The Garden of the Flowering Fragrance" is totally spectacular. This certainly is one of the many beautiful treasures in the state of California and you are all invited to come and enjoy  perhaps for the first time in your life a true "Seeing " of the beauty of nature as interpreted and presented in this  magnificent Chinese Garden.

William, you have a great collection of photos of a truly wonderful place to unwind.  Love the curly roofs.  It is interesting how many people do not know the treasures in their own backyards.  Sounds like you have a great opportunity to help people find out more about their area.

Thanks, Gloria

Hi Doug and Gloria,

Thank you. Like most things in life, some of these amazing places are not always in the  forefront of consciousness today. They are there , they are known of. Photo stories of these treasures are more rare than they should be. One of my hopes is that by sharing detailed photos of the experience, more  will realize what assets they have that can and do enrich their lives. The more we see , the more things are shared,  the more aware we become  of these treasures. While the experience may not  change someones life, the experience adds to one's overall life of experiences and that awareness is essential.

William, the Chinese are such an advanced culture and it is evident in how they approach even a garden. And you are an advanced photographer and your photos evidence that. What a great Localism post!

Hi Bill, You crack me up. I hope you can wait around for the second hundred years, cause I'm guessing that it might take that long while for them to doble in size, LMAO.

Wow William, these photos are amazing, you've done momma Carole Proud!! :) This is so great, I need to come visit this garden, you must have felt so relaxed and re-energized after walking around. The architecture is amazing too, just LOVE it!! Well done capturing this beautiful garden...also what camera do you recommend, I loved the manual black and white but that is becoming "extinct" :(  Is there a digital camera that acts the same with adjusting the aperture and shutter speed and all that manually? thanks!!~laura cerrano

Good Morning Laura, Thank you so much for your wonderful compliment. I hope you will one day soon get a change to see the Huntington, it is quite an amazing place.

I really don't have a recommendation for a camera other than to say I use a Nikon D-90 and like it a great deal. It sounds as though you might prefer a point and shoot  camera. Because I know of the many things that can be accomplished with an SLR, I favor that direction. Currently Nikon offer a D-5000 that is a an SLR, shots video and a variety of other features that make it a pretty good buy. I would suggest this, if affordability not the driving factor in a selection, I would recommend a SLR type camera . The all have the the automatic point and shoot  but in time, things may change and you may want to have the more advanced features of an SLR in including being able to use the myriad of lens selections for the camera.. If you get a good camera that would allow you to "sort of grow into it", I think that is the better choice longer term.

There are so many good cameras out there and other than my own selection it is hard to recommend for someone else since that is not my level of expertise.  But I am convinced that SLR is preferable for the longer term than a point and shoot. Hopefully this response will inspire you to at least consider that direction.

As to the black and white photos. Because there are so many great post processing programs out there, I think it preferable to always shoot in color and then convert to black and white which is remarkably easy. Then you always have the original should you want to revert to color for another use.

Hi Pamela, Thank you so very much for the great comment and compliment. I am delighted you found this as well and hope you check in to see so many other things I will present here in the Rain. The Huntington Chinese garden is really very special. The structures alone would be awesome but when coupled with the amazing design of the grounds is certainty a place to be enjoyed many times over. One of the things I also observed was even with it's grand size, it represents on a small part of the total. There is so much there and even an 8 hour visit barely skimmed the surface.  took over 650 photos and it was closing time.
