Practicing Real Estate is Like Having a Baby These Days!

I watch my 5.5 month old grandson on Fridays. It is really selfish of me as it gives me a quite day (for now) to catch up on computer work. Marketing, CMA's, looking at homes for buyers, and of course blogging. As I was putting my grandson in his bouncer I looked around the room and realized just how much "stuff" you have to have for babies these days! Swing, bouncer, bouncy chair, car seat, stroller, pack & play, baby bathtub, toys, diapers, wipes, hi chair, bottles, formula, on and on and on and on.

Practicing Real Estate is like having a baby

Then I thought how similar this is to practicing real estate these days.

  • I used to keep a few files in the car, that was it.
  • Next came the cell phone.
  • Then the laptop.
  • Traded in the cell phone for a Blackberry.
  • Camera
  • Added a video camera
  • Some food to snack on in case I am out too long
  • GPS Navigator
  • Electronic Keypad
  • More and more and more papers added to the files I was already carrying

I now have a laptop bag stuffed full of files in case I need something when not in the office. I had to trade in my purse for a large backpack in order to keep the camera in there. Add the video camera case, a bag with my lunch or snack in it, some water, etc. I look like a pack mule when I leave the house! I think I have just as much stuff as my daughter has when she leaves the house for a trip with the baby.

Then of course finding the right buyer for a house, or finding the right house for a buyer can be just like being pregnant. And the frustration level toward the end is probably the same. Just get this thing done!

Missing that all important due date or closing date is common!

Bringing things to a closing can be just like labor, same horrifying pain, can take forever, can be difficult. There are those times that we are all pleased and the baby just pops right out, or the sale goes off without a hitch, we all wait for those easy deliveries.

Of course the delivery makes up for everything, doesn't it? Yes indeed, practicing real estate is like having a baby these days!

Andrea - This is soooo true. I have the equivalent of an office file cabinet in the back of my SUV with files and papers ready to write that offer, or sign that listing at a moments notice. Count in the camera, the video recorder, the cell phone, laptop, gps, snacks, drinks and we are all a bunch of pack mules.

It seems like the more we practice, the larger the collection of stuff we seem to require. What the heck?!

Ted, how true! It is funny how sometimes they sail through, other times we have to hold their hands. Expected though, very difficult thing buying and selling a home.

Ron & Alexandra, glad you realized that was him. And thank you!

Donna, wow, nothing else huh? You must have all the info right in  your head, good for you!

Derenda, awww... yes, I have two right here, it is nice. And Friday is a day I can stay glued to him and the computer for the most part. Very relaxing, get tons of work done, all good stuff!

Ashville NC, thank you so much! He makes me smile too I will tell you.

Craig, like how I piled all that stuff around him? There was more, I just couldn't fit it in the photo, LOL. It is like moving, ghesh.

Ed, true. My office takes a while to get to, anyplace can. When I meet with clients I have to be preparedds!

Pat, rofl... that is funny. Yes we most certainly can!

Hi Judy, oh, an office file cabinet, rofl.. great idea! I used to but in this jeep it is impossible. My left arm is growing weary to say the least.

That's a good way to look at it. We recently welcomed our first child into the world and i had no idea how much stuff you have to have for them, and I have about the same collection of goodies that have to be in my car for work as well.

Yes, real estate is like having a baby - without the crying. Oh wait, clients cry.  Okay, without the spit.  Oops, I think they spit at us sometimes, too.  Well then, without the sleepless nights - no, I guess we have those too.

I think you are right on!  It's exactly the same as having a baby!

That was just too too funny Andrea, great analogy.  Congrats on yet another feature! You are on a roll girl!

Andrea, yep I have most of my files with me all the time, and of course I don't go any where without my bouncy bounce :)

Good analogy. Although as a man I'm not sure whether I'm qualified to say anything about having a baby. LOL. I feel like a beast of burden when I leave the house too. ;-)

Andrea...

I don't know much about having a baby around anymore, but I do know that selling real estate requires a lot of stuff!

Great analogy. It was not all that long ago that all stuff was part of the landscape of my home. I never really stopped to think how much stuff you "need" for a little baby. My two girls are now well past that stage (6 & 9) thank goodness.

Great post Andrea....  I too take care of my grandchildren at least 1 day a week.  You should see me when I have been working all day then go to their house and get their stuff.....  I have a Volkswagen Beetle so it takes me a few trips from the garage to bring everything in.  Wouldn't change a thing!!!!

Wonderful analogy! I have now started using 2 bags to hold everything.  Since I work at home, at least I don't have to carry the diaper bag to the office, except for a meeting.

JL, congratulations on the baby! Late as I am though, LOL. Isn't it amazing how much stuff we need in life? I want less "stuff", that's for sure. Thank you for the feature!

Margaret, and sometimes we cry and even spit.... and we have sleepless nights, you are right. It is like having a baby!

C Tann, thank you!

Hi Al & Peggy, thank you! I just looked at all his "stuff", then looked at all my "stuff" and couldn't help myself.

George, we all should make sure we have our bouncy bounce with us in life, LOL!

Nate, LOL, yes indeed, I have a thought about what we need to make our life easier, now if I had money I would patent it!

Richard, we need to de-stuff somehow! Before my shoulders and back are gone!

Jim, the stuff is quite amazing. I know you have lots of stuff for your work too, but you can leave it in your truck, LOL.

Robert, isn't it though, in many way.

VB, why thank you so much!

Cindy, at least I am at his house, which makes a difference. But early in the AM I am dragging all my stuff to add to his stuff, rofl. There is stuff everywhere then.

Marcy, LOL, the bags grow, and it is driving me nutz!

Oh, this is so true! I am always amazed at how much baby stuff parents think they need now. But then I read your blog, looked over at my desk and laughed.

The other thing I was thinking of was that its kind of like giving birth.  I have two transactions that have been in "gestation" for about 9 months. Hopefully there is a birth closing in the near future.

Did you describe the natural childbirth, the labor pains...and how many transactions last more than 9 months. Maybe they are the high risk ones. I have seen a couple of "terrible twos" and a few temper tantrums.

Congratulations on your grandchild and your featured post!

Margaret
