You would think with the news so prevalent be it television or radio, internet or blogging even word of mouth that parents would get the message not to leave children in parked cars for any reason especially on a very hot day.
We have heard of an increase in the number of deaths of small children who where left alone in a parked car in the summer heat. Already 19 children have died this year from being left alone in a parked car a cause that is easily preventable. Doctors say it takes only 15 minutes for a child to succumb to the heat and die in a hot car.
No one is perfect, so there will be mistakes, oversights and moments of inattentiveness. It is not good, however, to be faced with manslaughter and child endangerment charges or excuse ourselves because of carelessness or negligence, so here are some safety rules.
SAFETY RULES
- Never leave your child alone in a vehicle
- When a child is on board, keep a reminder in the car. Put your purse, briefcase or cell phone in the back seat. You will need these items on exiting the car.
- Cars should be locked even if they are in the garage.
- Coordinate with a child care provider or teacher have them call you if the child does not show up for day care or school.

Until recently, few parents were held criminally responsible in these cases. Now, however, authorities are seriously stepping in to prosecute negligent parents. We are on the road constantly so please keep an eye out for a child or children left unattended in a hot vehicle and call 911.
