Midnight Madness - Downtown Oakville 2010

Friday July 16, 2010

Downtown Oakville will celebrate it's 33rd year of midnight madness on July 16th.  Lakeshore Road will be closed to traffic from Navy Street to Allan Street to accommodate the 50,000 plus crowd of Oakville residents and visitors for this huge annual retail event.

All of the downtown shops and boutiques will keep their doors open until Midnight and many restaurants will offer up food and drinks on outdoor patios.  Various Charitable Organizations will also have tents and barbecues set up so the sounds and smells and sights will be awesome.

It is like a huge block party only there are  a half dozen blocks with bands, performers, and entertainment at every corner along the way.  The Oakville Fire Department is always present with their ladder trucks and are a big hit with the little ones.

The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts always draws a huge outdoor crowd just sitting around the perimeter and enjoying the music.  Towne Square is another popular rest stop.

This is an evening when strollers, dogs, wheelchairs, rollerblades, old and young alike get to intermingle along Lakeshore Road and the sidewalks of Oakville's downtown core.

Of course this is also a great opportunity to take a stroll along Oakville's beautiful waterfront, harbour and pier.

Midnight Madness is a very special event in Oakville that only gets better with age.  I'm sure #33 in 2010 will not disappoint.

Here is a map showing available parking lots and garage downtown Oakville.

Hey Jenny, did your mother take you down there as a newborn for the first one? Sounds like a free for all, hopefully the stores will benefit from it as well.

Jenny,

It is fascinating how these small (relatively) towns have their own events, that became a tradition, and which attract quite a number of people to go and celebrate

Jenny, sounds like a great night. If these temps keep up, it would be awesome to walk up and down the streets like that at midnight!

Jenny,

It sure sounds like a great event to attend.   If you bring your camera, make sure to spot any moose that maybe also be out at midnight.  I shared one of a moose that was out during the July 4th fireworks. :)

Edward & Celia, I would think after the terrible weather in Florida last year that more snow birds will head your way.  My parents said that will be their last winter in Florida.  It never warmed up at all the whole two months they were there in Feb and March.

Thanks Don, yes it's a great community to call home.

Hi Pam, it seems to get busier each year.  Towards the end of the night it's mostly teenagerss left hanging around but I've closed it down a few times myself lol.

Wanda -I'd love to Wanda the streets with you.  If you don't like the music at one corner you just keep walking to the next.

LOL Ed, you are very funny.  But I did take many of my kids down as newborns.  I can remember carrying my second guy in one of those snuggly things and many times fighting my way through the crowd with a stroller always worried I'd lose a kid.

Hi Jon, whenever I'm showing someone new around Oakville I always drive them through our downtown core and tell them about these events.  Although the town has grown to over 175,000 people we still have a small town atmosphere with our great boutiques and shops.

Al & Peg, I can remember many years ago it started raining and my husband's grandmother was in a wheelchair as she had broken her ankle.  We got permission to bring the car in past the barricades to load her into the station wagon.  Funny I remember that.

Kathy, I like that and actually have not heard it before.  Makes perfect sense.

Hi Marc, sometimes the shops are just too crowded and hot to go into.  Even the sidewalks are too crowded so we walk on the road.  I will be a Casinorama the night before seeing Rob Thomas but should be back for this.

Oh Gerry are you sending me on a moose hunt again?  I do have something for you and didn't get around to posting on Monday.  I will try to get it together on the weekend and ready to post on Monday.

Hey Jenny, I'm pretty sure I left you a message here a while ago...guess I forgot to hit the "submit" button.  Anyway, midnight madness sounds like a lot of fun.  Reminds me a little of roller skating along lake Michigan in Chicago.

Hi John, as long as it doesn't rain I will be happy.  I hope your daughter has good luck selling her house.  I don't know too much about the Bowmanville area.

Hi Nick, thanks for coming back and pressing the submit button this time.  I for one won't be roller blading but I know some will be.  I saw a guy roller blading down the street today with a cast on his arm.  It wasn't keeping himi down.

Hi Barrie, that makes perfect sense doesn't it?  I will remember that saying.

Hi Debra, It's good for the downtown merchants and the restaurants.  And lots of fun for everyone else.
