Random Acts of Kindness

By
Real Estate Agent with Real Estate by Design with Keller Williams Realty

I got a call from my mother this morning and she told me the following story that went a little something like this:

*ring, ring*

"Hello?"

"Hey there, I had something really cool just happened to me and I wanted to share it with you."

"Ah, cool, what happened?"

"Well, I don't go to Chick Fil A very often, but I drive by and figured, what the heck, I really could use a chicken sandwich."

"I remember we used to get their cole slaw all the time."

"Yeah.  So, I placed my order and went to pay with my credit card like usual.  But the lady at the counter said, 'oh, it's already been taken care of.'"

"Do you have some sort of secret admirer following you around?"

"Ha!  I wish!  She informed me that a man had recently gone through the drive thru and paid extra money and told her that the next few orders were on him!  Can you believe it?"

"Wow, that's an awesome story!"

"Yeah, I thought it was really cool and just wanted to share.  Have a good day."

"You too, mom!"

*click*

I think that random acts of kindness like this are just absolutely amazing.  Even though I wasn't personally involved, it made my day just hearing about it, so I figured I'd share in hopes that it keeps things like this happening (both the acts of kindness and the ensuing good feelings).  If we can all find a little bit of time in our days to do things like this, imagine how wonderful it would be.

You could take it a step further and leave a few by leaving a few of your business cards with the money, so that people know some random, really nice Realtor just bought them lunch and didn't even hit them over the head with a sales pitch.  Who knows?  It might just get you a new client!

So, to the random guy who bought my mom a free lunch for no other purpose except to just be a nice guy, thanks!

you rock!

Love that picture! Not sure how I feel about the tip of leaving the extra money with business cards. People might feel the gift comes with strings attached.

Thanks for sharing this story...and for the reminder... I've paid the extra tolls at the toll booth a few times in the past, sometimes for someone who wasn't necessarily the best at sharing the road... and really enjoyed imagining the reaction from them.... Of course, I have to say I'm glad I don't live anywhere that I get the opportunity too often, but I still think I've been the one to enjoy the experience more than the one who got the "gift".

One of my most favorite movies ever is "Pay It Forward"! The entire principal is something that I wish everyone would live by, myself included. Can you imagine what our world would be like if people routinely practiced random acts of kindness and paying it forward??

Thanks so much for making me think of what I can do tomorrow...

I think that leaving your card would take out the randomness and although nice, wouldn't be as selfless as being completely random.

I like when you don't even know who it was.  That makes it more special.

This happened to me quite some time ago when I ate lunch at a chinese buffet.  I asked the lady for the check and she said that it was taken care of.  I asked who and she said that the man already left.  Of course, she got an extra nice tip and I was elated :-)

I agree that leaving a card with money would take away from the anonymity.  You don't want anybody "tracing" you in your act of kindness.  If you leave a card, you want somebody to call you.  I don't think it would be in the same category...

Kindness does pay!

I make sure that I compliment at least 3 people every day!  It can be there eyes, shoes, shirt or something they do! It costs me nothing ,but I'm hoping that it helps "to make their day just a little more pleasant!"  everyone wants to feel good about themselves!

What a wonderful story ! Inspirational.

Makes me want to buy some Tim Horton's coffee (Canadian eh) for the next few cars when I'm a my usual drive thru. I love handing out gift cards with a few bucks on them for coffee to my past clients etc. Random is even nicer.

thanks

Carissa, love, love that picture.  If that didn't make me smile, the story did.  How special to know that there still are many people around doing such special RAOK's.  Let's all remeber to pay it forward.

Fantastic! Just think if everyone went out of their way to do one small random act of kindness Clarrisa? We just hope all those people who got a 'free lunch' paid it forward! It doesn't have to involve money, it could be as simple as carrying someones bags to their car, opening a door and just smiling at someone.  Did you know there was a random acts of kindness site? Think its www.randomactsofkindness.com  Have a great day and :)

I've been doing random acts of kindness since around 1976 when I was introduced to the concept at Texas A&M University. I think it empowers the randomer and the randomee.

As an aside, when you go to a restaurant and pay the bill, leave a nice tip (even if the service was poor) with your business card. You'll be remembered, and what goes around often comes around.

Carissa,

We should all do nice things for others every day.  Not only does it give us a good feeling, but it will make the other person's day.  The world will then be a better place.

I just read there is one group that would like to promote a day of random acts of madness.
