A Visit to "Sunny Field"

Solvang, California
(Slideshow contains 11 images)

Nestled comfortably in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, is the little Danish City of Solvang.  For a little taste of old fashioned Denmark in the middle of California, Solvang is an enchanted place to visit.

In 2011, the little city will celebrate its Centennial.  It was Founded originally on 11,000 acres from a Mexican land grant to several Danish educators, who came to the area while escaping harsh Midwestern winters.  Solvang is Danish for "sunny field."

If pastries are your delight, you will find the town bakeries very special.  Solvang hosts several great restaurants, cafes, shops and activities, in Danish style buildings, to provide a feeling of having traveled across waters to visit this enchanted place.

Around the little city, you can find statues of Hans Christian Andersen and the famous Little Mermaid.  Located near Solvang is the California Mission Santa Ines.

Driving Directions from San Francisco - Driving South on Highway 101 to Highway 246 (at Buellton).  Turn left east ) and travel 3 miles to Solvang.

Driving Directions from Los Angeles - Driving North on Highway 101 to Highway 246 (at Buellton).  Turn right (east) and travel 3 miles to Solvang.

Hi Myrl, The photos are great and it is cool that Solvang got two posts in as short as 6 weeks. But to me it is so charming that the community deserves the attention. Wonderful photos!

Hi Myrl, another place I would like to see.  I love the architecture and the feeling of being transported to a little Danish Village across the sea.

Myrl, that is one of our favorite places to visit.  Darcy's Grandfather worked at Nordic Knives for years, her Grandmother worked at the needle works shop, I can't remember it's name for years also.  It is so beautiful there!

Hi Barbara Jo - Solvang is about a 4 1/2 hour drive from my home in Sacramento.  But it is worth the drive.  I usually make it that way, when I am combining it with other areas along the California Coast.

Hi Myrl,

This was some trip as we are clear down by Santa Barbara now!  Will you take us back to Sacramento through the San Joaquin Valley?

I loved how those Gerber Daisies popped right out at you!  Solvang is a beautiful town!

Myrl,

I learned my first Danish word with "Solvang".   :)

It is nice to see people bring their heritage and culture to place away from the home of their ancestors.   I find it very enriching to learn about these special spots/villages and what better, when visitng then to be able to sample some new and delicious food.  It is the next best thing to visiting the country of their ancestors.  You slide show truly displays the beauty of this enchanted place.  I liked the photos of the colorful flowers you have inserted in the slide!   :)

Marzena - There really is something magical about them.

John - UCSB, now that would be a perfect place to go to college.

Bruce - I actually returned to Sacramento via highway 101.  It was inland just a tad from the coast.  But not like highway 5 or 99, which take you through the heart of San Joaquin Valley.

Gerry - I enjoy the diversity of vrious cultures as well.  When we were in Solvang, they were having a Farmer's Market.  It is there that I photographed the flowers.

Hi Myrl - Those are the types of places I like to visit and I'll bet they have great Danish beer. It reminds me of my trip to Europe in 1990. My wife would go crazy (window) shopping there! :-)
