Whale migration off Palos Verdes

By
Real Estate Agent with Re/Max Palos Verdes

I have lived here over 30 years and I have never seen anything like this. The last several days there have been a Blue and Fin whale migration just a few hundred feet off the coast of Palos Verdes. The best vantage point is just south of Pt Vicente, where the whales come very close to the cliff. If you were at Terranea, a luxury hotel, you would be getting quite a show.

I saw a few last Wednesday, with the highlight being over 50 whales passing the cliff on Thursday. There were still quite a few over the weekend, and at times they would stop and splash in the sea. I see them all the time while driving along Palos Verdes Dr. I was able to shoot a few video's - here is a post of one. Its a bit long, with some great footage -

Towards the end of the video there is a massive Blue very close to shore. He is acutally doing a barrell roll to bring krill to the surface and feed.

Music was performed live by hungbuny and recorded at the Sea Palace Studio. More whale footage at www.palosverdeswhales.com

Enjoy your day)

Hi Sheila,

Over the last few years I have seen more and more Blue whales off the coast. Palos Verdes is known for hosting Grey Whales in the months of November through April. They annualy come very close to the cliff and stroll around the hill all winter. Over the last four years I have seen more and more Blue Whales in the summer months. This migration is massive, there have been countless (50 or more) whales passing each afternoon, headed north along the Pacific Coast and coming very close to PV to feed in the rich kelp. Pretty amazing.

How cool - we don't get as much whale migration on the East Coast.
