Too Hot To Blog

Thermometer registering 100 degreesBefore we segue into the season of posts about snowfall, blizzards and cold temps I've got to record my rant about this summer.

It's the torturous summer that never ends.

It's September in a few hours and we're in the middle of another heat wave.

"Oh, you don't need air conditioning," I tell buyers, "We only get a handful of really hot days."

Usually that's true.

But not this summer.  We had 90 degree days in April and we've been through such a siege of hot and humid days that I've been at the end of my rope for weeks.

Sunny days too.  No rain.  For weeks.  Everything died - and the trees that didn't probably will next year since apparently it takes another year for the effects of a drought to show up with mature trees.

Through it all the weather boys and girls would give chirpy reports about the wonderful weather. Are you kidding me?

In fact, when we finally got a cool and rainy day last week I have never heard so many people crowing about the wonderful weather and the relief of it all.

Short lived relief.  Hot and humid again. I'm back to lugging water buckets trying to bring the street trees back to life.

When I'm shoveling snow I'll remember these days and be grateful. Ha! Probably not.  I'll be grumbling then too.  But I'll be a lot closer to sane in January than I am in August.

Fall can't get here soon enough.

Elizabeth - I had to laugh at this!  Yes, I agree that it's been WAY TOO HOT...however I know that come January when I am shoveling mounds of snow off my deck for the umpteenth time I will be wishing for 90+ degrees again!!!  Don't you just love New England!

Elizabeth, we've had the mildest summer ever here. We only went into the 100s twice. We had one month that was rather hot and now we can feel Fall. I guess we traded places. I hope you get some relief. It's not normal for you to rant. You have done a very nice job of it. There has to be a bit of humor in a good rant.

Hi Jane ~ Sounds wonderful!  We had my version of a fantastic summer last year when it was chilly through July.

Hi Lisa ~ I never wish for the 90s - the 70s maybe - but the chilly weather last week sure caught my attention - you clearly can't stockpile the heat.  All too soon I'll be trying to wait to turn on the heat despite being uncomfortably cold in the house.

Hi Jeanean ~ That sounds a-ok to me! This summer has definitely pushed me to my limits - I don't get depressed in winter but I was right at the edges of my coping abilities this summer.

Elizabeth, we still have friends and relatives that live in the greater Boston area and we felt soo bad for them this year. We live in Marina Del Rey and it has been soo cold this summer outside of maybe three days. BTW I am not complaining I like cool 68 degree to 70% sunshine all year around.

Elizabeth...we can so relate here in Hotlanta....but we sort of deal with it EVERY summer! I too look forward to cooler days when my hot tub is more enjoyable. But, when it's freezing cold outside (ok probably not like what you get, but it's still cold here....) I WILL be grumbling about being cold.

I'd like it to be 80-85 every day.....is that to much to ask???

Hi Diane ~ So sorry to hear that!! May it be over soon. We broke all sorts of records this summer too.

Hi Endre ~ That's my favorite weather too though I don't even need sun.  Your summer sounds marvelous.

Hi Thom ~ That's just it - our weather hasn't been very New Englandy at all.  You kill me with the cooler days - hot tub hopes. Here it's more likely to be down jacket weather before you know it.

Oh Mark! What a picture!! Tours become real estate death marches on days like that.

Liz -

We hit 95 AGAIN today.  It's dry, everything is dying and I am actually looking forward to having a hurricaine come through here.  Enough already.

Hi Elizabeth, You have had a hot summer this year. We've been extra hot too but 98 or 105 feels about the same, and we expect to live in a sauna during the summer. :) jay

Liz,
I feel your pain, a few days ago the temperature in my neck of the woods was over 100°, two days later is was in the 70's.  Strange
weather.

Liz - you've had a hot one for sure, as have a bunch of other areas. We have been on the coloder side than average, at least along the coast.  And lots of other parts of CA (like San Gabriel where Dee is) have been in the 100s. Heading off to Scottsdale next week for CRS leadership - I expect it will be in the low 100s at is was last year.

Liz, I so understand. Except we have AC window units. Broke down and couldn't help it. If we didn't have them upstairs you would cook up there.

I will remember these days when the wind is cutting through me and the snow is all around.

Liz - It's going to be another scorcher today! I am a little nervous about Hurricane Earl. With water temperatures warmer than normal (due to this HOT summer), we could be in serious trouble. Fingers crossed that this one goes out to sea.

Liz - I absolutely love the heat, hate the snow, but anything above 90 is even too much for me.

Hi Liz ~ You still haven't had a break? Wow, that's rough. We did have a break from our rain last week, but of course it's back this week again. Our summer has been wet and cool and we've only really needed a/c a couple of times. It seems the weather is doing weird things all over the place. Strange times.

Michael ~ I laughed out loud when I read your comment. I am in the exact same place - bring on the hurricane!

Hi Jay ~ I was just thinking tonight that Massachusetts has turned into Florida this summer. Not what we signed up for!

Hi Dee ~ Strange is the word this year.  It started in the winter when the South got more snow than the Northeast. Weird.

Hi Jeff ~ We had the cold summer last year (it was sweet!). I guess the 100s aren't too bad when you know you'll be heading home to the cool coast.

Hi Andrea ~ It really is a bummer how you can't store the cold or hot days for when you really need them.

Hi Judy ~ Earl is bringing the cool weather but I hope things aren't too wild where you are.

Hi Michelle ~ For those who love the heat it's been a wonderful summer. My happiness starts to decline above about 72. Needless to say I'm not happy!!

Hi Denise ~ I love the sounds of your summer!! We've got the light at the end of the tunnel predicted for the long weekend.  If it comes to pass I'll finally be able to clean my house - ha!! That's what I tend to do with these big holiday weekends - housekeeping is a seasonal thing for me I guess.

Hi Lottie ~ You absolutely scored on your vacation.  And yes - San Francisco is my idea of weather perfection.

I think we're going to wind up having our coldest summer in years. July was the coldest July since 1933.
