Cary, NC: Searching for Homes with Attics, Walk Up Attics

Where to stow your stuff?  We have basements in the Cary, Apex, and Morrisville area.  But they are at a premium.

We have garages, and they take up a lot of the storage slack for folks who used to keep their stuff in basements.  But when innovative shelving and overhead bins and racks are not enough, what about the cars?  And a lot of entry-level housing units do not even have the garage.

Attics are where people next look for storage.

And, a roughed in attic can be very appealing additional living space, when all or part of it is nicely finished.  Many attics come with framing in place, most electric work already completed through rough in, and some even have sheetrock stocked at time of building to simplify finishing the space.

And, it is extremely difficult and very expensive to plan and add an attic staircase to a home that was built without one  So, searching real estate sites for attics means looking for a home with permanent attic stairs, rather than the pulldown stair units we see in most homes.

My mother's condo in Greensboro had a vantastic attic space (no garage and no basement). It was a pull down stairway but for luggage and seasonal items it was really prety nice.

Glenn,

One thing we have to consider is the high temperature attics can reach in the North Carolina summer.

Some items can deteriorate significantly in a short time.

I wish modern homes in our area had walk up attics but most don't...

Maureen,

Commonly here there is a price break between trussed roofs without attics and trussed or framed roofs with attics.

We have plenty of homes with a pull down stair, mostly for access to heating and cooling equipment.  Particularly on slab foundation homes.

In older homes, that pull down stair may lead to some storage space in a partially floored attic.

We don't have pull down stairs even much which is OK.  We seldom have heating or cooling in the attic.  Home inspectors usually tell people NOT to store stuff in attics. I have heard them discourage buyers from flooring attics.

We don't have a lot of slab construction in Central Ohio.  We did when I lived in Dayton so I remember pull down stairs from there.
