If your grandparents or you yourself grew up on a Maine farm, any property with some land to afford horses, cows, small critters and say chickens, goats, sheep, you know the special early morning feeding, graining, watering ritual.

maine farm photo

It could be a cold winter early Maine morning outside with a full moon stilled parked high overhead.

Your laced up snow boots with wool socks underneath crunch and pack as you make for the barn.

As you enter, instantly the smell of hay you bailed last summer, an increase in temperature from the animals only greets you. The snort, one horse kicks at maine winter horse farm photothe hemlock standing stall side boards, another cribs on the box stall top timber you plan to wrap in metal this afternoon.

To help with his bad chewing habit he can not seem to break on his own, despite your scolding, counseling.

All the horses, cows, animals turn to nod hello, knowing the drill, routine. You are going to bring them a coffee can of grain, the good kind with mollasses, corn and other quality ingredients. Just like you did yesterday. And the day before. Sometimes with a grand child as a helper, extra farm hand.

Climbing up in to the hay loft ladder in to the barn attached to the horse shed. Then throwing down some square hay bales, the eighty pound maine moose in woodsvariety through a trap door you raise, then lower to protect any one going through playing in the barn later on that might not know it is there.

Peeling off flakes after kneeing in to the hay bale to remove the twine holding it tight, together from field to barn storage.

Tossing a few flakes in the stall manager in front of every hay burner in the place.

Then pulling the lever on the frostless water line carefully put below frost with the line under two inches of styrofoam insulation to make sure it flows all winter long to the barn.

Wrestling with the garden hose when it did not last year tarnished the early morning experience, communion with the critters.

But not this year due to changes made back when the leaves were vibrant green, on the large maples around the Maine farm you own, enjoy.

You used to chase the dollar in the city far from this small Maine community.

The best of the bunch, cream of the crop, pick of the pack at your high stress position you begged, borrowed, stratched your way to the top of.

Your work, craft both highly lucrative but included with the many zero place income, the same high extreme level of cut throat tactics and pirate maneuvers to get there, stay there.

But always, always knowing you were trading in the material treasures of the position and prestige for new jewels that money can not buy. Maine's stars, the full moon, bright sun, cobalt blue water and skies, emerald green leaves and brilliant velvet night sky pollenated with brilliant stars the real attraction, natural gems. Where your country heart resides.

Barbara ... you are so right. But not glamorous, hard work like the "Where Corn Don't Grow" song reminds. Your life therapy is on an antique farm tractor cultivating and hoeing, planting or harvesting. Farming with broken equipment on a poor, lean year is the counseling we get from the talks on the open porch, not at a 55 minute session with a paid professional. Like the Waltons with three generations under one common solid roof.

Cindy... That is the farm I own, grew up on at the top. That is my hobby, how I learned how to, need to work and be industrious.
