Kumquat Festival Dade City Florida by Silvia DukesWhere to Go and What to Do:  14th Annual Kumquat Festival - And what's a Kumquat?

This weekend, the 14th Annual Kumquat Festival will take place in Dade City, Florida, on January 29, 2011 from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Located to the North of Hernando County, Dade City is just a short drive away and the Kumquat Festival is a great way to spend a day.

You want to know what a Kumquat is?  Imagine a mini orange about the size of an olive and you get the picture!  Kumquats are a member of the citrus family, they are sweet on the outside and tart on the inside!  Kumquats are eaten whole with the peel!

But while this is produce-themed festival, the Kumquat Festival has much more to offer than just Kumquats Pie which is a very delicious culinary concoction than everyone should try at least once!

In conjunction with the Kumquat Festival, there will be the Annual Kumquat Festival Car and Truck Show with trophies and awards given at 3 PM.

Dade City Florida Courthouse Kumquat Festival by Silvia DukesThere is also a very popular arts and craft show and a street market with a wide variety of goods offered for sale from antiques to everyday useful things.

If that's not enough, you can enjoy history Dade City, Florida, visit some of the many antique shops or let the festival unfold in front of your eyes while relaxing in one of the many small restaurants and cafes in town.

See on Saturday in Dade City at the Kumquat Festival!

Silvia: This is such a great post for your community. It makes me want to visit there if I should ever visit Florida.

We had several kumquats around the house where we lived in the late 1990s. They were extremely tasteful, which makes me wonder why the grocery stores don’t carry them. The coyotes and foxes also liked them. We’d often see them early in the morning rolling kumquats along the ground and playing with them.

Donna, just make sure you call me when you do!

Jim, we have little tree as well, they really are quite ornamental.  I don't like to eat them though at least not raw, somehow I can't get over the idea of eating the peel.  I have however, cooked them into a syrup and then topped them off with brandy.  It's pretty good over vanilla ice cream! :-)

Silvia- our family had a kumquat tree when I was growing up in Houston.  Haven't thought of them in ages!  Have fun at the event.
