Groundhog Day in Ofallon MO February 2, 2011

GroundhogGroundhog Day, February 2nd, is a popular and fun tradition in the United States. It is also a legend that has covered the centuries.  Its origins are clouded in the mists of time with ethnic cultures and animals awakening on specific dates.  These myths tie our present to the distant past when nature did, influence our lives.

It's the day the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow.  If he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole.  If the day is cloudy and, shadows less, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground.

I cannot speak for everyone in Ofallon MO but, this Groundhog Day I for one hope that the groundhog does not see his shadow.  In my humble opinion winter came for a visit and has over stayed its welcome.

All I can say is come on Spring....

Well, with all the grey skies, snow, sleet, high winds and other crud going on; if I were the groundhog, I'd just sleep in for the next 6 weeks...

I saw Puxatawny (spelling?) Phil on the news a little while ago.....he declared we would have an early Spring!!!  Everybody there was doing the happy dance, but that may have had something to do with adult beverages.

If they would shut off all the camera lights, he would not see his shadow half the time.   Longer wintersare the cameramen's fault!  lol

William,

I am thinking that it is just a silly ploy with that groundhog, maybe they should use a turkey in a tree with a fox at the base.

Cheeky thing!  My daughter just moved last summer from O'Fallon to Tampa, Fla. with her Air Force husband, basking in the sunshine.  May your winter be short!

Good morning Susan,

I too hope that the already long winter will be shorter.  I also wish at times I was in sunny and warm south Florida.

Good morning Devona,

I would tell you how cold it is here but I would need a bleep machine to keep from being banned from AR.
