"Best Cities For Singles" is on Forbes.com It was published in August. I would not have even noticed the list if not for an article in "The Other Paper" about 24 year old Paul Hamm (an Olympic gymnast) being Columbus Most Eligible Bachelor. Wonder what the difference is between Paul Hamm and his twin brother Morgan?
Forbes.com says:
"And finally for most of the cities on the list we have selected a "most eligible" bachelor and bachelorette' Who is the most eligible bachelor in your city? Agree?
This is the 7th year for this list but the cities and the definition of what a city is have changed from pervious rankings. The Forbes.com article says:
"First, because we are using a different U.S. census definition of "city" this year, four cities have been removed from consideration (Charlotte, Greensboro, Nashville, and Raleigh-Durham) and have been replaced with four new cities (Jacksonville, Buffalo,Memphis and Baltimore). "
They explain later in the entry what the difference is:
"But in 2007, we've begun using the Census Bureau's "Urbanized Area," which provides a tighter focus on cities themselves."
Denver which was number one in the 2005 rankings dropped like a rock to 16th because of the changes in the definition of what is a city. If I understand the article correctly in 2005 Boulder was considered part of the Denver stats but it is not with the "tighter focus on cities themselves" in the 2007 ranking.

Forbes.com says of the methodology and rankings:
"We looked at 40 of the largest urbanized areas in the country and judged them on culture, nightlife, job growth, the cost of living alone, online dating, the number of other singles and that ever-elusive quality, cool."
It's hard to believe we in Columbus are above Miami, Memphis, Sacramento, Portland, Tampa and some other cities on the list. However when it comes to that "ever-elusive quality, cool" Columbus is 40th in coolness. Maybe we need to work on our "coolness."
