How does your city rank for singles?

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

map man North America"Best Cities For Singles" is on Forbes.com It was published in August. I would not have even noticed the list if not for an article in "The Other Paper" about 24 year old Paul Hamm (an Olympic gymnast) being Columbus Most Eligible Bachelor.  Wonder what the difference is between Paul Hamm and his twin brother Morgan?

Forbes.com says:
"And finally for most of the cities on the list we have selected a "most eligible" bachelor and bachelorette'  Who is the most eligible bachelor in your city?  Agree?

This is the 7th year for this list but the cities and the definition of what a city is have changed from pervious rankings.  The Forbes.com article says:

"First, because we are using a different U.S. census definition of "city" this year, four cities have been removed from consideration (Charlotte, Greensboro, Nashville, and Raleigh-Durham) and have been replaced with four new cities (Jacksonville, Buffalo,Memphis and Baltimore). "

They explain later in the entry what the difference is:

"But in 2007, we've begun using the Census Bureau's "Urbanized Area," which provides a tighter focus on cities themselves."

Denver which was number one in the 2005 rankings dropped like a rock to 16th because of the changes in the definition of what is a city.  If I understand the article correctly in 2005 Boulder was considered part of the Denver stats but it is not with the "tighter focus on cities themselves" in the 2007 ranking.

I wrote about Columbus making the list for best cities for singles on my other blog... ColumbusBestBlog.com

Here's the 2007 Rankings for US Cities

"San Francisco-Oakland
New York
Los Angeles
Atlanta
Chicago
Washington
San Diego
Seattle
Dallas-Fort Worth
Philadelphia
Boston
Austin
Minneapolis-St. Paul
Houston
Phoenix
Denver-Aurora
New Orleans
Las Vegas
Columbus
Miami
Detroit
Orlando
Memphis
Milwaukee
Sacramento
Baltimore
St. Louis
San Antonio
Portland
Indianapolis
Buffalo
Tampa-St. Petersburg
Virginia Beach-Norfolk
Jacksonville
Pittsburgh
Salt Lake City
Cleveland
Kansas City
Cincinnati
Providence"

Forbes.com says of the methodology and rankings:

"We looked at 40 of the largest urbanized areas in the country and judged them on culture, nightlife, job growth, the cost of living alone, online dating, the number of other singles and that ever-elusive quality, cool."

It's hard to believe we in Columbus are above Miami, Memphis, Sacramento, Portland, Tampa and some other cities on the list.   However when it comes to  that "ever-elusive quality, cool"  Columbus is 40th in coolness.  Maybe we need to work on our "coolness."

Maureen, "coolness" is an elusive concept - I wonder how we can measure it?   :o)

Miami is "cool" but the singles are a bit older..

According to the survey, it appears to be pretty cool here in Minneapolis.  And that's not just a reference to the climate.

Washington does well for the young, hip and single.  What I want to know is how my city ranks for geezers!

Coolness isn't everything or Columbus wouldn't be 19th on the list would it?  It does kinda stick in my craw... but then again I have not lived in the other cities.  I will have to read it more and see how they measure "coolness."  Some cities I have been to, but then again I am not young and cool anymore.  In fact I may have never been "cool".....

Good for singles is not all about young singles though either.  A few of the cities most eligible bachelors are not young athletes.  The most elgibles do have to be in the limelight so they are kind of silly choices in some cases.  I think locally a vote of most eligible bachelors would look very different than something that comes from Forbes.com

I am not particularly a fan of Forbes.com but I do get sucked in each time they rank cities.  Thanks for the comments.

Hmmm, guess San Diego IS the place to be (even for those of us who are not single). The downtown area is going crazy with condos being built and lots of folks moving in to be part of the hip, cool lifestyle. But I'm glad I don;t feel a need to be part of that, but the chnages in the city are very positive. Thanks Maureen.

Maureen - no idea, is there a poll for how a city ranks for married people?

I wonder if Forbes includes those 50K+ kids on/off campus in their numbers. Do they give any indication of how they handle college populations?

Patricia: Maybe Forbes.com will do Geezers at some point.

Jeff: We have positive changes in our downtown as far as residential development goes.  Strangely our downtown mall is going under, has been for a number of years but it sounds like it may die completely soon.  Just this week Macy's announced they are closing their downtown Columbus store.

Azis: I don't believe it was a poll.  I believe it comes from statistics so I assume if anyone cares they can do a story about what cities rank high for married couples.  I would  bet it is many of the same cities.

Elaine: I assumed it omes from census info so I would guess OSU students are counted the same as college students are reported in other cities. We do have a large university population but a lot of the other cities also have lots of students.  A couple in the list have numerous colleges and universities in the area.

Maureen...I'm going to send my son to one of these cities...except not Las Vegas (too many party animal singles here)...he's will be 38 next month, never married, has a steady job (15 years same job) as an Associate Pastor of a church in a town that apparently does not have available women (Yuma AZ), owns his own home, and is looking for a good Christian woman.  He's got a LOT of requirements though and some, in my opinion, are stupid.  Anyone have someone in mind???????

Mary lots of us lived in the boonies and found true love... wait I'm divorced.... what am I talking about? Most of the world does not live in these 40 cities... and I thnk the majority of adults are married, aren't they?  Maybe more people committed to the single life live in these 40 citiies or in cities where there is more  night life and coolness.  Your comment made me laugh though.

I am impressed you raised a son who became a minister!

Ah, once more Charlotte misses a list...we are just never considered to be cool-no matter who we're friends with and no matter what car we drive-but that's okay.  I'll take a strong job market and strong housing market over a coolness factor anyway. =)  I'm like you, love these lists no matter their merit.

Maureen - Thanks for the list - Indy made it, coupled with the fact we were recently voted the city with the most affordable housing, maybe I should consider a new niche. Mmmmm!

Leigh: Charlotte was always on the list... until Forbes.com started using a different definition of city.  I am sure Charlotte is both cool and has lots of jobs.

Paula: the poor single people niche?

thanks all for the comments!

A baby boomer here and glad to see that Cleveland did make the list.   Maureen hope you do not mind me referring people to check out www.clevelandSinglesDance.com it is a place to go dancing every friday.  And they normally get between 200-300 people(my estimate)  I have made many friends there.   The crowd is not like the bar scene and I have enjoyed myself there the last 3 years.

Does Columbus have anything this???   If so a trip to Columbus might be a good weekend trip.

In my brain the Columbus singles dancing crowd still hangs out on Sinclair Rd...  but it has been years since I have gone so I may be working under false assumptions. And that is a bar.  There were also dances at the Elizabeth Blackwell Center???  One of my friends is into dancing big time, I should ask her sometime where they go these days.  Maybe I could Google it?

I have two left feet so dancing was never on my list.  I hate dancing so much I  broke out in a nervous sweat reading your comment Tim.  Thanks and the link is fine... I think.

Maureen,

I had not been on the dance floor for 20+ years when I started going to the weekly dances.    I had the same fear when I started attending the dances.   I had to force myself to ask a lady to dance.  I did and the first lady I happen to choose was a great lady that lives in Canton.   And would you believe it she was a Realtor.   I only danced twice with her that night.   And made it a point of asking one new lady each week to dance.   And I kept that up.   In the 3 years I have only been declined a dance 7 times.   The group is that friendly.   Also this group up here has a cash bar, but I say very little drinking occurs.   I drink pop.  The first couple of weeks I will admit to having a COURAGE BEER.  Some times we need to loosen up a little, Life is to be enjoyed.   If you ever come up this way, I will make you dance with me.  LOL   As long as my GF does not mind.   Come enjoy this Great City.     You know Cleveland has been a "ALL AMERICAN CITY" more times than Columbus.

Interesting that they removed all three cities in North Carolina, especially Charlotte which is a thriving area!  I will have to protest to Forbes!

We took a ballroom dance class when I was married. It was OK as long as I could dance with my husband because he helped me because he understood. Once we switched partners I got really, really sweaty. I don't know right from left unless I really, really, really think about it. The fact that there is someone else who has a right and a left of their own and you are going around in circles doesn't help. It is dance dyslexia, not a major disability but it makes dancing no fun. Add to that I ain't got no rhythm and I WANT to lead and I am not cut out for dancing. I gave up trying to make dancing part of my repertoire about 10 years ago... walking and chewing gum at the same time is tough for me I like Cleveland to visit, a lot of Cleveland feels more like a city than Columbus. I did not know Clevelan got an "ALL American City" more times than Columbus I'll have to take your word on that.

Diane: I dislike  Forbes.com since their Drunkest Cities ranking last year... it was disputed, they say it is amended somehow but I read something about how dumb the criteria was.  Needless to say Columbus rated high on that list.

I was thinking they used the city strictly rather than the metropolitan area statics if  so growing areas with lots of jobs with lots of singles young or old, no matter how cool are not necessarily defined as "urbanized areas."   A change in definition.
