LET'S PLAY NICE--How Civility Wins Every Time

By

Whenever you have two parties in a transaction, civility and mutual respect should be at the forefront of any discussions.  In recent times, I’ve had the unfortunate experience of working with an agent or two who have a deficiency in the art of communication and civility that it made the whole process more difficult and definitely unpleasant.

Agents who assert their “experience” in an Alpha Male/Female manner is a huge turnoff to me and I’m sure to most people.  When an agent purposely creates a conflict by disputing every situation or when an agent becomes overbearing; they are not only showing an insensibility but also potentially creating a conflict that could pose an issue on the entire transaction.

Likewise, if you’re working on a short sale; an angry agent at the start of a short sale will only turnoff the person that may be there to help you move this short sale along quicker.  Save that anger for later when the lender has definitely not performed and you’ve made all attempts to resolve the short sale reasonably.

One of my very first jobs was as a Collector for a Fortune 500 company.  My boss had us work under the 3 part guideline.  You give the company 3 continuously elevated tries to resolve the past due receivable and then you go to a tougher stance.  That way, they can’t argue that you didn’t try.  Likewise with lenders, if you’ve tried to work through the clog in a reasonable way and can’t succeed, then you have more “meat” to provide them for your discourse.

I do understand that some folks may come across harsher than they really mean to and of course you make concessions for the way a person speaks.  But if the words accompanying the speech is harsh and the tone is harsh, then really that just comes across as condescending.  Who can really work with someone like that?

Great Post Helena! I couldn't agree more :)

I became a member of our local mediation board (Kuikahi Mediation Centers) for tow basic reasons... #1 to give back to my community and #2 to learn how to avoid conflict or resolve it if avoidance was impossible. It has helped me immeasurably in my business (any my home life but don't tell the kids :))

We all have bad days,  but business on the other handis just that.  Wear a smile to all the professionals that you work with, then go home and punch the pillow a few times.

I can work with almost anyone, but those superior acting and rude agents really can test me.  I try being nice no matter how nasty they are and often they end up softened.

Everyone could learn a lesson from the Egyptian demonstrators.  Forgetting the politics one way or another, they got their way by simply asking for it until they got it.  No one blew themselves up, they didn't storm the presidential palace or bash heads in even when they were attacked that one day, but they just kept being peaceful.  What a lesson!

Hi Dawn, I love that saying and that's my guide on all things....You're so right!

Hi Trevella- First I'm jealous you get to work in Hawaii!!  Second, what a great way to learn mediation in all areas (especially kids!).  There will always be conflict that can't be avoided but can definitely be mediated.  It's amazing when I come across individuals who thrive on conflict when there need not be any.

Hi Rosemary, On the mark.  We all have those bad days and I'm sure it comes across.  Once in awhile is understandable for sure.  Smiling goes along way in this world.

Hi Susan, OMG, the events in Egypt has given me hope that peaceful demonstrations CAN lead to peaceful outcomes.  It's an amazing and historical event!!!!  Nasty agents are definitely a test and teaches me patience.

Thank you all so much for your great comments!  This is a wonderful community we belong to on Activerain!!!!
