The Legacy of Member’s Only Posts

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

A couple of years ago I started writing only PUBLIC posts because I felt there really wasn't any need to do Members Only posts. Why?  I mean, let's get real here. ANYONE CAN SIGN UP and JOIN here at ActiveRain.  Your clients, your neighbors are and your relatives are all reading everything you're writing right after they take just a minute to sign up.

What's the point of writing a Member's Only post when anyone can be a member?

I suppose there are some that feel they are protected when writing nasty, hateful and bigoted posts about politicians or spewing religious rants. NOT.  Then there are others who write about their rants on clients or commission splits who feel that that Members Only category will protect them.

Well, I don't know about you ...but I love my license.

Blogging for Business and Bonding with Peers is the best way I can describe the experience I have had on ActiveRain and here's how I've made magic with Public Posts:

  • Write ONLY what I would want anyone in the business to read.  My peers are the ones who are reading about the person I am. The rants (or not), the positive side, the family side are all part of the make up of who I am. Would they refer clients to me after reading all I displayed on the internet? If I am writing about my expertise in real estate and how I turn negative situations in positive learning lessons I am apt to receive more referrals. IMHO of course :)
  • Write ONLY what I would want the consumer to read. The consumer may be my next lead or a referral to a friend or business associate. If I am handling myself professionally online I can guaranty they will know I handle myself professionally offline. At least it gives them a better idea of who I am and will be likely to be in person.  At least I am getting that one foot in the door until they pick up the phone to call me. Because I write the same as if I am in person, they will receive a personable person on the other end of the line.
  • Write ONLY what you would want you mother, father, husband, wife or children to read. Our children are led by example from us. Our parents will look at us as if we are the reflection of all they taught us. Our spouse's will be proud of the person they have an intimate relationship with...all because of our writing online and the person we truly are. They say that in order for anyone to see the person behind the words that we have to be a bit transparent. I act the same online as I do in person. I'm loved :)
  • Write ONLY what I would want my neighbors to read...and know. We all have neighbors who want to know about the people who live next door or down the street from them. How much do I want my  neighbors to know about me and my personal life?  There are just some things that we really don't need our neighbors to spread around the neighborhood. Especially our feelings toward them if aired as dirty laundry online.

These are just a few examples of what has worked for me in feeling comfortable with my online legacy and the legacy that I am leaving behind.  I am aware how I affect others and a personal rant will be carried into oblivion for everyone to see....right here online.

The way we write and who we are writing for...

(regardless if we mark it Public or Members Only)

Will determine the legacy we will leave behind

....On or Offline.

Celeste,

Great points!  I used to say in training sessions that I conducted, to never write anything that you wouldn't say to a grand jury, and I think you'd be safe.

Sally....you make some very good points and it's good direction to follow.....but once in a while, I like to rant about a real estate transaction and we can't do that to the public!!!  nothing rude, just a rant.

Barbara: A civil rant indeed!  What I'm trying to get at is that Members Only ....is NOT private. Anyone can sign up for ActiveRain and read all...including the client, transaction or what have you.

Hi Sally~  You make a some very valid pints here.  I think that all of my posts are public.  What you see it what you get with me whether on the net or in person.  I truly value my real estate license and am very proud to have one.  I have a nursing license as well, but real estate is my livelihood.

Hey Vickie! Same here. I think the majority of us found out along the way that we say (write) what /whom we are. If we can't say it face to face then there is no sense to trying to make it a members only. ANYONE CAN JOIN.   I too, understand the value of my license :)

Sally, I have often thought about this. There are some that I just don't want to give the Google MILK to, and that would be why I post Members Only. Yes, there is always the chance that the public will see it, I know some clients that are members. But my reasoning is a bit different.

And sometimes this is the only place to get your head screwed on straight...

Andrea: Okay...so that's a good point although some I see are not for that reasoning. It's to rant political, religious and rants that could cost them a license.....which is a bit different.

Like Andrea, I sometimes post "Members Only" to stop the Google-bots.  If my Mom or clients read them -- okay -- but I'm not TRYING to get the general public to read them!

Sally, I rarely post members only because you're right...anyone can become a member, so what's the point.  That being said, there are some posts that just shouldn't every be written, and it would be better if they were "members only" than public because some people aren't reading them - and the fewer the better!

Hi Sally, A very good post and one that everyone should read and think through. I tried to re-blog but that service is temporarily suspended. I stopped writing these Member only posts some time ago.

Hi Sally - I think that all of your posts would be of benefit to anyone who reads them - AR member or not.  I try to follow your example and keep my posts public.  I would like to think that I would be pleased to hear that any member of the public is reading my blog, and there is nothing I am ashamed of, embarassed about, or that I wouldn't say to anyone, including potential clients.

Sally - I still do Members Only posts as I learned the hard way that when you are going through tough times, you don't want Google to pick it up and spread it to the world.  I consider other AR members to be my friends and Members Only posts are where I can reveal a bit of myself and get support from time to time.  I realize anyone can become a member, but few do.

Cameron: I guess that the only thing you picked up on was my typo???

Richard: So...what do you write that you do not want google to pick up on? Needless to say...if the general public wanted to ...they can join and read it anyway.

Margaret:  You and I were in that group :)  I think it was BB that spoke of that long ago...Yes, those are fewer read...but heck...help people out with a few pointers for the reason to just write what you would not care if anyone read...sounds like a good idea to me. It's up to those who care not :)

Hey William! Same here...and deep stuff I talk to the person about anyway.

Susan: Same here. Nothing to be ashamed about if written wisely to begin with :)  I'm with you on that one.

Gail: It's your choice... If I should be so blunt...this is for those that badger, nag, and cut others down in "public"... Even then...those Members Only posts are out there for US to read. Go back up to my point about PEERS....would I refer clients to those that are ranting as that?  .....

Best to you too Steve!

Hmmmmm I should have talked about the comments that people add to a seemingly nice post to make it look like there's something to debate about. None here :)  Those comments go out there as well.

Sally, great reminder for us all!  I told my son when he first got his cell phone to not text anything that he would not want me or the principal of his school to see.  The same is true on Active Rain.  When I post members only, it is because it is targetted at members of the RE community.  If it is targetted to consumers, I post it to Public.
