COUNTDOWN TO ST PADDYS: Mickey D's Shamrock Shake Story - Inspiring to say the least!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty Canada - Brokerage
I enjoyed my treat of my one and only one, Shamrock Shake on Saturday and LOVED it! (as I knew I would!!!) Then I remembered this blog post I wrote back in 2011 that I thought was worthy of sharing with our newer readers. So, if you've not had your Shamrock Shake yet, times a'wastin!

We're quickly approaching St Patrick's Day and it seems everyone wants to be Irish!

Everywhere you look, people will be taking part in the wearing (and drinking) of the green and McDonalds is no exception.

Their Shamrock Shake goes way back though, to a lovely story . . .

from the McDonalds website:

"It all began with a little girl, a football team, and a visionary doctor. The Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill's daughter was diagnosed with leukemia and began treatment. The Hill family were camping out in waiting rooms in hospitals and saw other families doing the same. They realized that many families travelling long distances to visit their sick family members had nowhere to stay and could not afford hotel rooms.

The Hill family did something about it. Hill and his team decided to raise some funds. The team's general manager, Jim Murray, called a friend in McDonald's advertising and suggested the team on the next promotional push. It just happened to be St. Patrick's Day.

The Shamrock Shake raised enough money to buy a four-story house which was the first Ronald McDonald House Charity."

Isn't it amazing what one family, one vision, one team effort can accomplish. I am thankful for big hearted people who think of others whilst dealing with their own pain. Thank you Hill family (and McDonalds).

Susan--My kids always looked forward to their green shake from McDonald's---but I never knew the story behind it or if I did, I have forgotten it! Amazing how such a small item can make such a big difference!

Well I'm so glad you re posted this in 2013 I did not know this story and have never had a shamrock shake. This is a nice story and I could go for a shake right now except in NY we call them malteds.

LOL Liz -  I don't think a "Shamrock Malted" has the same ring !   Let me know what you think of it when you give it a try.

I am "Irish" sort of... as my great.... great... 10 generations back grandpa Matthew Talbot was born in Ireland in 1699.  But the fact of the matter is I am not drining a green milkshake.  Doesn't sound/look appealing to me at all.  But I will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day.  I always have birthday cake :)

Susan-That is a wonderful story I never knew. The power of one can be a force that snowballs which this did. I am not sure I would like drinking something green and definitely not this year and it is for a good cause that I am not partaking. Enjoy yours. I am Irish but I don't know if it is from Northern Ireland or not. I am a stubborn Irish gal. Smling
