Didn't Columbus Day use to be a national holiday and they removed it and replaced it with MLK day?  Or was that I dream I had?

I am not sure if Columbus Day and Martin Luther King Day have anything to do with one another.  I am not sure if Columbus Day was ever a national holiday, I don't remember it being one... I believe celebrating Columbus Day became unfashionable in the 70's... un P.C. I did a blog last year about some of the controversy about celebrating Columbus Day.

We had a Columbus Day parade in Columbus when I first moved here but we don't anymore.  I know New York City has a big Columbus Day Parade.  I kind of like the weekend events / discounts instead of a parade.  It makes a lot of sense to celebrate the city to me.

Columbus Italian Festival has traditionally been this coming weekend but so is German Village's (a Columbus neighborhood) Oktoberfest.  It makes more sense for the Columbus Italian Festival to be on the weekend of Columbus Days locally.

I have never been ANYWHERE in Ohio but if I ever manage to get close, I will definitely find my way to Columbus (and to meet you too!). Looks like a lot of fun. THanks for filling us in  :-)

Mary

PS You mention moving there - where'd you come from??

It is a great photo thanks to Derek and Wikipedia for letting me use it.  I read just within the past couple of days that Cinci and St. Louis have the same weather.  That surprised me because I remember hearing how brutal St. Louis summers are.  I don't think Cinci summers are that much worse than Columbus summers.

I have never been to MO.  Thanks for the comment Pamela.

I just noticed that I had not responded to the OJ people ( I think it is Janis ) comment. I can't remember what I did on Columbus Days this year! Yes I do. I went to Italian Festival at leasts one night... I think it was nice that the Italian Festival in Columbus was moved to the weekend of Columbus Day. I enjoyed it. I hope the Festival got more traffic, I am not sure if having things like the Gallery Hop at the same time would increase or decrease traffic. I had funny comments on both of my real blogs about the Italian Festival from someone trashing the Columbus Italian Festival for moving to that weekend because a band he enjoyed was not involved this year... I think he thought he was doing the band a favor spamming for them on Central Ohio sites. Oh well... There was great music at the Italian Festival this year. We may have done the Columbus Zoo that weekend too. Thanks for the comment Janis.
