Stanislaus County Short Sales - Is that Email Really from the IRS?
We are about one month away from that favorite day of the year for a lot of people. (He says sarcastically) Tax day, April 15th is coming up soon. As if having your taxes done (if you already haven't) and mailing that check to Uncle Sam isn't bad enough, there may be someone else out there trying to take your money.
The IRS receives thousands of reports each year from taxpayers who receive suspicious emails, phone calls, faxes or notices claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. The goal of these scams (phishing) is to get your personal information such as bank account numbers, social security numbers and or credit card numbers. Once they have that you can say goodbye to your money.
The IRS wants you to know that they do not initiate contact by email. In fact the IRS website has some good information on these scammers. We all work hard for our money and the last thing we want is for some low life scammer to get his or her hands on it. Besides that's the governments job.
If you are getting a big tax refund this year, congratulations. Have you thought about using that money as a down payment for a house. Did you know you can buy a house with a down payment as low as 3.5% of the purchase price? Did you also know that many times the sellers will agree to help pay some or most of your closing costs?
