You Can Twitter Without Being an Asp

By
Real Estate Agent

Occasionally, I need to break my own rules.  "What rules," you wonder?  Since Twitter first came to the social media scene, I have avoided the 140 character app, like the plague.  I simply couldn't understand why anyone would need to communicate in a matrix, with so limited a character restraint.

But that was before a very adventurous Egyptian cobra managed escape from The Bronx Zoo this past weekend.  Shortly thereafter, BronxZoosCobra, began tweeting its "sssslithering" escapades in New York City.  I have visited NYC, but must admit BZC is experiencing The City with a totally different and insightful perspective.

In one tweet, BronxZoosCobra posted, "On top of the Empire State Building - All the people look like little mice down there. Delicious little mice."  But my favorite BZC tweet is his visit to Wall Street, "Visited Wall Street as well, but didn't stay long since the people down there made my skin crawl."

Real Estate Professionals often attend classes and seminars on how to network and use social media to effectively reach the world with marketplace wisdom of the day.  BronxZoosCobra has accumulated 120,000 followers within a couple days after checking out of its digs at the Bronx Zoo.  That's an enviable number of subscribers by any standard.

In one tweet, BZC describes itself as "venomous - not poisonous," reminiscent of some bank negotiators during short-sale transactions.  Except I suspect BZC would call them "short-tales" rather than "short-sales."

While some news media is labeling the "missing in action" reptile as a "fugitive," I don't see it that way.  If someone cooped me up indoors for a number of years, I'd seek escape and a Twitter account too.  Afterall, wars are currently fought in the name of FREEDOM.

So, as of this morning, I can also be reached at twitter.com/MyrlJeffcoat . . . And as BronxZoosCobra would say, "Thankssss."

Yeah, I heard about the hilarity of this tweeter. I think the best way to use twitter is to post those shortened likes of your posts to it and adding a few good keywords and a call to action.

Hi Myrl,

Who would have ever thought that people would follow an escaped snake on Twitter?  Very clever tweets.

Just heard on Fox News that they found the cobra. Wonder what will happen to the BZC account now; someone will probably figure out a way to monetize it.

All - News has it that the BronxZoosCobra has been found in a reptile house corner today.  I have mixed feelings about it.  Glad that the public isn't in any danger, but I will miss following the adventures of BZC on Twitter.

I agree with John Novak.  I wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't figure out a way to monetize it.  I would think the Bronx Zoo could use the Twottert account to run a fund raising drive for better digs for the asp.

I also think a song could be composed.  Rather than, "I lost my heart in San Francisco," there could be, "We lost our asp at the Bronx Zoo."

Myrl, you're a breath of fresh air.  I wish more people of your generation would embrace Twitter like you have.  Hell, I wish more people would get past whatever 'stigma' they have about Twitter and start using it.  Twitter is an amazing untapped resource for Real Estate agents if they follow the golden rule, which is... listen, don't talk.

Gary Vaynerchuk touches a bit on this in his novel 'The Thank You Economy.'  Using Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) is a lot like playing ping pong... the game is a lot better when the ball goes back and forth a couple of times.  Consider that with Twitter. You may find more success with Twitter if you start communicating with people.  Respond to people's tweets, then when they mention you back, continue to the conversation.  GET TO KNOW EVERYONE! You never know where your next deal may come from!

2 tips before I go, because I'd love for you to do well.

1. go to search.twitter.com then in the search box type "near:(your area code goes here) leave a space and type your keywords."  Then hit enter.  What you'll find is all the people in that area code tweeting about those keywords.  Here is what I suggest.  Don't push your business on them.  Hit the reply button and begin a normal conversation with them, as if you were at a cocktail party, or met them in a Starbucks.

2. If you haven't done this already, and have both a Facebook Page (for your business) and a Twitter account, you can connect your Facebook page to Twitter so that every time you update your Facebook page it posts onto Twitter as well.  Don't worry though, it doesn't work the other way around, so none of your Tweets (which you will probably start doing a lot more of) will post onto your Facebook page.  To do this, goto http://www.facebook.com/twitter and then select 'link to twitter' and follow the rest of the instructions (don't worry, they're pretty easy to follow).

Well Myrl, I wish you the best of luck.  Consider yourself followed on Twitter... and please let me know from time to time how everything is going.

mk!

I've been watching my following going up a lot faster and have been getting more calls since I started to show my humor on Twitter. Humor is something people like and though some want to be serious all the time, my clients like to laugh and be relaxed during the transaction.

I enjoy what I do, so why not be me in my tweets and blog.

Maureen - According to Bronx Zoo Cobra's latest tweet:

"Bronx Zoo's Cobra @BronxZoosCobraCan someone pick me up a Mega Millions ticket? With $640 million I can just buy the zoo and let myself go. "

Unfortunately, I don't think he won.  The news this morning is that there are 3 winners.  One each in the state of Maryland, Kansas, Illinois.  No winners reported from the Bronx:-(
