With Everyone Claiming to Know SEO, Who Can You Trust? What Makes an SEO Expert?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Personal SEO - Website SEO and Real Estate Marketing

What makes you an expert?  Is it training, experience, knowledge, skill, ability or education? How about a little of everything? It's hard to call someone an expert without any experience regardless of the book SEO online marketingknowledge. Just because you took 300 hours of real estate education did you know everything there was to know about it when conducting your first transaction? Probably not. If so, wow, maybe you are an expert!

You can Google just about any SEO term, phrase or question and perhaps get 3 or more differing opinions. Do you trust the first one you read? Do you believe the first doctor that tells you that you have 6 months to live? I would hope not. It's the second opinion, comparative results and research that help make an informed opinion on the subject. And even then, many times it is still just an opinon. BUT - Do you have the time? When it's not life and death and you're talking about codes and URL's you probably don't have the time to bother looking up every theory or technique. This is where you have to put your faith into someone that actually does take the time to research and develop a system that works.

Did you know there are SEO blogging platforms just like ActiveRain solely for SEO professionals? There are. Quite a lot actually, much more than real estate because we ARE online. All the time. We don't leave the computer to do our job. The computer is our job. We toss around ideas, theories, what works and what doesn't and collaborate on the best practices for our clients and ourselves. This is our full time job. We don't practice real estate any longer although we used to and have blended that knowledge with our current profession. We are not mortgage lenders that do a little SEO on the side. We are not inspectors that helped out our friends get going on the Internet.  We are 100% SEO - online business marketing  - all the time.

Granted there are many SEO companies that claim to do many things and then outsource, drop the ball or just plain don't deliver. Such is the case with any business I assume. There is always going to be real estate agents that over promise and under deliver by a long shot. Does that mean they all are poor professionals? You tell me? Of course not, you're saying.  Does 1 year make you an expert? 5 years? 20? - ok, SEO probably didn't do much to the system in 1991 so no one can claim decades of SEO experience.

What makes an SEO Expert?

Results, Testimonies and Consistent Trial and Errors.

If you can't produce, and don't have testimonies to prove it, forget it. There are over 200 variables to ranking a site well. Saying one thing over the other is the end all source for SEO just cannot be verified. It's the constant and consistent application of most of these variables all working together. Its the testing a theory over and over, finding what works and what doesn't and excelling on what makes a site rank higher than another. You can't learn this by doing it on one site but on hundreds at the same time to see how your work and skill performs across the board.

So is it s Experience - yes 10+ years - Is is knowledge, yes, researching the latest algorithms, blogs, videos, news and changes. - Is it Skill and Ability, yes, the brain power to comprehend intricate code issues, programming and URL creation. Is is education - yes, 12+ years of certifiable training and knowledge built up by applications, testing and learning through classes and performance training.

If you want to increase your expertise on SEO here are some great blogs and resources to get you started. But you could just leave it to the "experts". ;-)

Hi Tammy, I used to create websites back in the mid 90's. I figured out by myself that long search terms work. And you are right about getting results. That matters 10 fold! Since I'm pretty much the only agent in my area that has a website and that blogs, I come up about 6-7 times on the first page of google. All that website building way back when paid off.

You are worth your weight in gold for those that have little knowledge of SEO!

Tammy. Another very well written article. I am not big into SEO. I just write about what I do and where I do it and the rest seems to take care of itself. However, I'm sure I could do better.

You are right though that as a novice I have no clue who to trust and who's just trying to get paid. Too many people claiming to be experts.

I trust Matt Cutts, Rand Fishkin, Danny Sullivan when it comes to SEO. They aren't trying to sell me a blog or get me on the first page of Google when I read them.   I recently started to read shoot... His name escapes me. His site is  Thought Fawcett. Last name is  Dehwald... lives in VT or NH.  Writes for Inman...

He wrote about a trick I saw one of the SEO experts who preys on Realtors here do.  Selling souped up WP blogs the AR member  did a webinar but it was really a commercial for himself  / his sites.  Dehwald's post about analytics explained what this guy  was doing to make the analytics look so good on the sites he built.

Galord Dehwald?

Corinne, if you love what you do, do it! Other agents know you are not trying to get their business so  they can trust what you know - and it has worked for you. So many think they can blog a couple times and the leads will just come pouring in. It takes a lot of time and effort. Even on my end, I can't do all the perfect things and have them instantly be ranked.

Thanks Ed! :)

Ronald - almost! Probably harder I think.

Cheryl - thanks! :)

Jackie - with so many others online writing about the exact same things it may even be hard to get ranked for a long tail - at least in the long run. It takes more creativity than ever to rise above your competition. Of course it helps when you are the only agent in town working like you are! ;-)

Bryant - Thanks, Keep doing what you're doing and if it's working, keep it up!

Maureen - yes of course Matt is great but he still keeps us in the dark about everything. Giving little bits and pieces here and there when he can. I keep up with the latest there but it's all still trial and error.. SEOMoz.com is a great site as well and one we follow on a reg basis. Danny is also a great one to keep up with. Yes it's Gahlord Dehwald and I have read a couple things.. my husband might keep better tabs on him than I do. He does most of the research. Thanks for stopping by! :)

"yes of course Matt is great but he still keeps us in the dark about everything."

He's an employee of Google. It's not his job to tell anyone Google's algorithm or what is changing.  Reading his blog  can help us common people understand SEO a little bit.  Reading real SEO experts can help when an SEO expert is really selling snake oil.  Lots of snake oil salesmen selling SEO and websites are attracted to ActiveRain, and have been from the beginning.

Tammy, it is hard sometimes to trust SEO companies due to the bad ones make the industry look bad. I am not an expect by any means on SEO, but not a week goes by without someone calling me to sell me SEO services. Every so often, I will ask a few questions when I get these calls and the sales person knows less than I do......

Maureen, yes that's exactly what I meant. Because he is Google's SEO guru, he gives tidbits of what helps but not the whole picture., Obviously. ha.. That's the whole game. That's not to say that I don't read, watch and listen to everything he has to offer! :) Absolutely!!

And there are so many SEO companies that simply resell something that you could do on your own. That's what irks me. I don't re-sell PayPerClick because anyone can do it themselves. I don't feel that's ethical. It's an easy set up that anyone can do. Its all the details associated with a site that can really be time consuming and although you can do it yourself, many times, folks just don't have the time. And that's where we take over. :) Thanks for your comments Maureen. I really appreciate them.

Erica, SO TRUE! You really can learn a lot on here. What agents have done themselves, what SEO providers can recommend. It's the collaborative effort of all variables working together.

Scott, When you know what you're doing, your priceless!! Keep it up! :)

Tammy, SEO gives me a headache.  I'm SO thankful that my hubby is my webmaster.  I truly wouldn't know where to to turn or who to trust 100% with everything.  There are SO darned many variables as you mentioned.  I know just enough to be dangerous, lol.

Hi Tammy, Somehow I missed this post and a very good one by the way!

"What makes an SEO Expert? Results - You bet. Testimonies (maybe) Consistent Trial and Errors - Absolutely! A million and one components go into search engine placement. Where one falters, another kicks in. Optimization is hitting your website/blog site from every angle possible with as much SEO know how as possible. Not only that, Google changes it deal on a regular basis and you have to be dialed into those changes. You also have to look at your website/blog site as an evolving project. Its never finished - always in a state of flux.

Tammy,

We all know who the REAL expert is in this area don't we?

It doesn't matter how many satisfied clients we have, and that we've been doing what we've been doing for a good number of years or that we're not "smart" enough to understand how to read a balance sheet.

If we were that good, I guess Matt Cutts would be quoting us, instead of the opposite?

Cheers Tammy!  Good to know that what you write I can believe in and trust!
