AR Guidelines -- Blog comment spam. Is it okay to add this link?

Active Rain is a great real estate community with over 206,000 members . There is no better place on the web to get the valued information that one can get here, just by posting a blog. The conversations that ensue through the comment section add insight and knowledge to the blog topic. People reading the blog comments can gain extra value from those comments. Comments help build the blog topic into a discussion instead of a statement.
Along with real estate agents and brokers, there are real estate investors, loan officers, property inspectors, property managers, home stagers, SEO experts, video experts, photography experts. The list goes on and on. Each person proficient in their field and willing to share that information. All relative to the business of real estate.

I was reviewing the Active Rain guidelines and was curious about the specifics of the one that states;

Do not advertise yourself or your services in the comment section of another members blog post.

This was addressed back in February of 2008 in a blog written by Rich Jacobson Would You Like a Side of SPAM with Your Comments? - AR Guidelines Re-Visited.

Rich states: "Conversational blogging is about engaging the reader. It's about establishing a meaningful dialogue. The 'Comment Section' of someone else's blog post it is NOT, I repeat, NOT the place to promote your business, website, widget, services, etc.."

Have I been guilty of this before?
I have left comments before with a link to a blog that I have written or that someone else has written. I left the link because I felt  that it would add value to the "comment conversation" and further help someone else. It was not a link to my website. It was not a link to my business. It was not promoting my services.

In this comment that I left on my own blog, I added a link to a post by Brad Andersohn regarding your profile picture. The person I was addressing didn't have a profile picture. I felt this would help them. NO PROMOTION.

In this comment that I left on someone else's blog, I added a link to a series of newbie tips blogs that I had written. My intent was to give the blog writer more guidance and help as they were just starting out in Active Rain. NO PROMOTION.

Rich also states: "And further, by making 'meaningful' comments that are relevant to the discussion/topic."

I thought that's what I was doing. Making a meaningful comment that was relevant and added value. NO PROMOTION.

Am I guilty of breaking the rules by adding these links? Are these links acceptable?

Your understanding of this guideline is identical to mine.

What I really get a kick out of is when someone writes a criticism of me and/or what I write on MY BLOG and then link to themselves.

GEEZ!

I think the key is the way you go about a comment when you provide a link.  It's easy to spot a self serving spam link and when the commenter is actually providing something they find valuable to the point they are trying to make.

Thanks Craig for the reminder.  I am sure I "innocently" mentioned my blog and photos of a remodel I did when responding to a post.  :)....oops I did it again!

Lenn, glad to hear from you, If anyone knows the answer, it would be you, the goddess of blogging. Criticize you? The nerve......... Use the delete freely.

Allison, whether you are new to Active Rain or been here forever, I think it should be allowed if you ARE adding value to the conversation and it is not promoting yourself.

Steve and Jan, thanks for the vote of confidence. I will continue adding as long as I don't step over the line.

Eileen, well said. Glad to see that you understand the value too.

Sandi, another Britney blonde moment? LOL. If the link is to a post that will give the reader something to help them blog better or learn something new, it should be acceptable.

James, that's one of the many pluses of the Active Rain community, SUPPORT. We help each other learn and grow.

I'll go one better.  Over the years, almost 5 years now, that I have been an ActiveRain member, I have had two (2) members who, when asked to remove the link to their blog or a web site in their comment to my post, not only refused by commented further that they had every right to link to themselves on comments to my post on my blog.

HA!  One goes back to 2007, following which event, I have never commented on their blog, never recommended it for feature, never acknowledged any comment to any of my posts (few indeed), and generally ignore their existence.

When folks act stupid, they lose a lot more than they would gain from ignoring the AR Guidelines.

Lenn, with almost 207,000 members here, there's going to be that 1 or 2 persons that don't get it. There is so many positive benefits to be had from blogging and interacting in Active Rain. Action/reaction. Positve actions get positive results.

I've always wondered about this.  How glad I am to have stumbled across your helpful post.  I also really admire Lenn's opinion as well which reinforces your views!

Cara, this topic can make some people avoid leaving useful comment links. I feel that as long as what you leave ADDS VALUE to the discussion, it should be considered acceptable.

Ooops wish I had read this sooner.  I am guilty of leaving a link back to my website.  Generally it is done in a relevant way and not in a spammy kind of way ( at least in my mind ) but it sounds like I shouldn't do it at all! Lesson learned!

Craig,

You handled a VERY touch topic with some insight and the examples were particularly helpful.

I am new here and I am concerned that I " introduce " myself to the community properly.

I am NOT a Real Estate agent, which in it self, poses a bit of a problem, its hard not to be considered an outsider, event though people have been very generous with their help.

There is a line and people have to be careful not to cross it, especially people that are perceived to be " outsiders " :)

I will follow Debs advice, " sounds like I shouldn't,t do it at all " !!!

Bryan
