We have a small friend...Aiden Lukasiewicz, from St. Paul, NE (formerly of Kearney, NE) who recently celebrated one year of cancer free life...thanks to the great folks at St Judes Childrens Hospital.

Aiden's Grandma and Grandpa...close friends of ours...many years ago bought the house I grew up in and raised their family there as well.  We have many overlapping connections and are the definition of good friends.

Aiden's Mom and Dad are incredible young parents and I can only hope my son and daughter can come close to being the type of people they are!

They have handled the past two years with grace, dignity, love, patience, caring, honesty, faith, and hope.

When you are wondering what or where to give a donation to and have not had a family member child or that of a friend affected by cancer...please know that St Judes is the real thing and that without your donations...children like Aiden would not have a fighting chance...

I believe in St. Jude's for Children - I believe that in St. Jude's there is Hope. I am clicking suggest in the hopes that the AR Staff agrees this is worthy of getting some attention. For Aiden's sake - I hope there's hope.

I believe you have a great post and I hope to see it Featured because this is publicity that everyone in the RAIN should see.

Hi all...thank you for your kind works. I encourage you to keep at it for St Judes...and if you have a spare prayer...to send one more this way to Central Nebraska.

Since I posted this blog, Aidens great-grandma...who was only 73 and an incredible woman...died this Friday, July 9th, 2011 in a freak home accidental fall from a skull fracture and head injury.

I cannot even begin to describe the sadness this family is enduring this weekend. Charlotte was such a wonderful grandma and great grandma. And smiling friend to hundreds and hundreds of people...including my family.

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/theindependent/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=152443685

During a fundraiser for Aiden last year, Charlotte road up on her bicycle while my wife Robyn, daughter Jaime, and I were the only ones at the booth...as everyone was either out on the motorcycle rally ride OR at St. Judes, with Aiden, and she quietly handed me a check for $1,000 to help the fundraiser reach it's goal.

Charlotte explained that she did not want everyone to know she had done it...so she waited until everyone had left town for the ride because she knew how important each donation big or small was.

She told my wife Robyn she did not want this donation announced until the absolute very end...and only in the grand total...not as a single donation nor from her.

Then she handed me the check and then she gave Robyn, Jaime, and I a hug and we watched her ride off on her bicycle...

How lives can change in a heartbeat... the family was planning a surprise family birthday party for Charlotte's other daughter on Friday evening...the first day of a large local celebration in St. Paul.

Instead they found themselves in my town of Kearney...60 miles from home...as Charlotte hung on long enough for all her children to get there.

Audrey, Aiden's grandma...Charlotte's daughter...and a close friend of ours...Brian, Audrey's husband and close friend...and Matt...Aiden's Dad, have endured almost unspeakable sadness since August of 2009 when Audrey lost her father in a tragic cancer pain enduced sudden death...Aiden's illness...and now her Mom's death.

It was a very different feeling for me when I went back to the hometown celebration on Saturday...and not seeing some of the smiling faces I am used to seeing...and as I road out of town this afternoon, sitting beside my only son behind the wheel of his Monte Carlo SS...I couldn't help but wonder how his generation will react when it is my generations turn to go.

I hope he can handle it with the dignity and grace Aiden's family is.

Thank you for your prayers....Until next time
