FEMA, Just Hang Up and Dial Again!
Having been, and currently am, a flood victim one piece of advice I'd like to pass on to help others keep their sanity is that when you are visiting with FEMA via the telephone it is OK to hang up and dial again. If at all possible I encourage you to go to a FEMA center in person and visit with a FEMA representative there.
A FEMA "Headquarters" was set up here within days of the disaster that destroyed 1/4 of the City of Minot ND. The people that come to these on the spot locations have volunteered to travel and all of them that I've meet are very kind and careing people. Those at FEMA Central however can be a little more hit and miss. In large I must say that even those on the phone are very caring people as well BUT every once in a while you get a Government b_ _ _ch policy wonk like I did yesterday who hung up on me when I asked her for her supervisor. When I called back to speak to another representative he told me the wonk put down that we were "disconnected".
So, just following the afore mentioned FEMA policy wonks example, you should know that if what you hear on the other end of the phone when dealing with FEMA, it's OK to just hang up (become mysteriously disconnected) and call again. I will add that this gal did do me a big favor because when I called back I actually received the kind, considerate service I was used to receiving when dealing with FEMA.
