History and Artifacts of Hernando County, Florida - The Hope Hill Site
Last weekend, my husband and I attended an event by the Hernando Preservation Society, also known as Hernando Past at City Hall in Brooksville.
The Hernando Preservation Society had a number of exhibits on display from photos of historic buildings in Hernando County, Indian artifacts that were found in several locations throughout the area, historical area cemeteries, and much more.
One of the exhibits showed numerous artifacts discovered at a site off Hope Hill Road. Originally, discovered accidentally, an organized archeological dig found evidence of the home site of one of Hernando County's earliest settlers that eventually had burned to the ground.
The photo on the right shows pieces of a cast iron stove and carriage parts.
More digging into older layers of earth revealed numerous Indian artifacts incidating that the site up on a hill overlooking the surrounding terrain had been a Seminole village approximately from 1767 to 1835.
The Hernando Preservation Society is dedicated to the preservation of history and prehistoric sites and historical structure throughout "Old Hernando County".
Old Hernando County extended it's borders past present day county lines into Citrus and Pasco Counties.
