How Many Piles Do You Have?

~ How Many Piles Do You Have ~

Since I have been back in town, I have decided to reorganize my house and my business.  After having to go through all of Mom's things when she passed away, and I brought back lots of her stuff, I decided that I had too much stuff.

Mom was VERY organized.  I think it would put most folks to shame.  She had boxes labeled with what was in it.  Copies of receipts, warranties, manuals... whatever would be needed if someone were to take the item.  She had files on her computer organized like her Christmas card list (sending and receiving), birthdays, anniversaries, reminders of appointments, anything you can think of.  She even had a file labeled, "Upon My Death", which included account numbers, phone numbers, names, passwords, what she wanted for a funeral, songs, etc. in order to simplify things.  Now, that did make things easier for my sister and I, just not emotionally easier.

I have always considered myself to be organized, but I didn't even come close to Mom's organizational skills.  I would have to call her the Mother Theresa of organization.  Some people may call her a little crazy or OCD, but this was always how she had lived her life, after all she was a secretary for one of the Superintendents of a school district.

When I arrived back in Denver with my truck load of her "stuff", I had to unload Donna Fabiszak Jan 18, 1941 - Aug 27,2011it in a hurry to get the truck back so as not to pay additional rental.  I was overwhelmed with the chaos I had in my house.  So for the past couple of weeks, I have been re-organizing...my home and my office.  Let me tell you, I have certainly found things I thought I no longer had.  I didn't just take her things and put them away.  Nope!  I ripped apart my kitchen and pulled out everything I had and compared it to what I brought back with me and put things in piles.  I did this with every room in the house and even my office.

My piles consisted of keep, donate, garage sale and toss.  I did this with every room.  Crazy?  Yes!  But do I feel better?  Absolutely!  Not only have I been able to reduce the amount of "stuff" in my house, I was able to toss out things that weren't useful or had broken, have a garage sale and make a little extra cash and what didn't sell, I added to the donate pile.

Am I finished with my clean out project?  Not yet, but everyday I do a little more.  Often times we just put things away rather than reviewing what we currently have and try to reduce the amount of stuff we keep.  Through this process, I have learned that just because it was Mom's spoon or wall hanging or whatever doesn't necessarily mean that I am required to keep it.  Her memory will always be with me and I don't have to keep some little trinket to keep her memory alive.  How many piles do you keep?

Dawn, It must have been difficult going through your Mom's things. I lost my Mother recently but could not go to India. My sister in law had to go through the things and decide what to keep and what to donate.. I requested her to send me just a few items and to keep her sewing machine for me. I will bring it here some day. I lost my Father last year and helped my Mother with his stuff. It was very difficult for me. Dad too was well organized like your Mom.

So sorry on your Mother's passing.

Excellent well written post and I agree, we all need to rip thru evrything and get better organized.

We will feel better without all of the clutter and waste(seems like I read that in a book, I know it makes me feel 100 pounds lighter when I do it) amazing the power of the brain ha ha.

Best regards from Innerloop Houston Texas

Dawn I absolutely love your new picture.  I am so sorry about your mom.  My deepest condolences to you - I know you went through such a rough time.   Love the picture of your mom and there is nothing wrong with being too organized!  I wish I was as organized as your mother was!

Dawn, we always think there's value hidden in our piles.  There is at times but only to ourselves and that won't get you too far now will it.  Last week our thermostat got fried during a power surge, yep, I had an upgraded replacement on hand in one of the piles.  I think it was a blue moon that night!

Ron ~ good for you!  I have neglected to do that on an annual basis as I used to do.

Gita ~ I remember that you had also recently lost your mother.  It had to be so difficult for you because of the distance.  I hope you have found some peace and will be able to use her sewing machine soon.

Linda ~ I know I do feel much better without all the clutter.  I sometimes envy the people that can live simply.  Not me, I do like some stufff around!

Thanks Deborah.  It was a tough time.  I did appreciate your email then!  Stuff is just stuff.  It won't bring Mom back.  I just wish I was as organized as she was!  I felt I should put her photo in, so thanks!

Kevin ~ Lucky you for that "blue moon"!  HA!  I think we all tend to safe things for that blue moon....it will eventually come.  And now you have proof!

Hi Dawn, Good for you for doing this. I did some of that last week...but I am such a clutter/pile bug that it even makes me not want to look at it, I need to do it like you..seperate, give and toss. I envy your mother's organizational skills! You're Mom would have a smile on her face knowing you were organizing things. Like you said, your memory is trinket enough.

Dawn, I am sorry for your loss. What a nice thought to add her picture here! I lost my mother a couple years ago and had a similar experience going through her things. It really makes you realize that it's how the person touched your life and the memories that matter, not the possessions..

It is still tough to get rid of things that someone else cared about.  But if you just don't have the space, someone else will really appreciate those things too.

So sorry about your Mom.  When my Mother passed years ago I kept her slippers in  my closet for about two years.  They were really beat up but I couldn't throw them away for a long time.  I don't save things and so I don't have piles.  They make my eyes twitch.
