WHAT IS AN ELEVATOR SPEECH?

What is an Elevator Speech?

An Elevator Speech is defined as "a SHORT summary used to quickly and simply define a product, service or organization and its value proposition."  The reason that it is called an Elevator Speech is because it is supposed to be short enough (30 to 60 SECONDS) to present to someone if you were riding in an elevator and trying to get the person interested in what your business can do for them.

For someone to say, "I'm a Lawyer for Non-Profits" is to possibly turn others off immediately.  But for them to say, "I'm saving the people who are saving the World!" is to grab their attention and make them want to know more about you.  THEN you smile and explain to them that you are a Lawyer for Non-Profits, and what that looks like, in approximately 30 seconds.

It is a SHORT speech that you have crafted and finely tuned, and then memorized it until you can say it in your sleep.  It is a hook to make them want to know what you do, why they would want to use YOU over another Realtor or Stager or Mortgage Lender or Editor, or whatever your profession is. 

Here is an article that I recently wrote about HOW to write your Elevator Speech.  An Elevator Speech is different than a video Business Card, which is a short video that allows you to show others who you are and what you do in your business, but a video Business Card is an ACCOMPANIMENT to your Elevator Speech.  You will NOT be able to show someone your video Business Card if you have 30 seconds in an elevator with them.  

Here are some samples of Elevator Speeches to help you get an idea of what yours might look like.  Good luck, and don't forget . . . if you are doing a video for the Contest, it should just be to emphasize your Elevator Speech, it is not a replacement for it.  Sample Elevator Speeches
