When pumpkins fly in Vancouver - they're aiming for 1000 meters. Two local men have created the ultimate flying machine for orange gourds, and so far they've sent one 25,525 feet. Their ultimate goal is to propel one another 756 feet.
Joe Barbera and Russ Villhouer have been firing pumpkins for quite some time, but this fall, the duo has upgraded their firing technology. Theirpumpkin cannon now sports a 38 foot barrel made from steel heating duct and is braced with a sturdy metal frame.
The pair says the propulsion magic really happens when you add an 8 pound pumpkin and an 80 gallon tank of pressed air to the firing chamber. Barbera and Villhauer say their cannon fires pumpkins at a rate of 240 feet per second, but not all survive their first few feet in the air.
The world record for pumpkin shooting is just under a mile. Those flying pumpkins are shot out of 100 foot long barrels mounted on a flat bed semi trucks and are powered by 300 gallons of compressed air. None the less, 1000 meters is pretty impressive.
The pumpkins will be flying today at Heiser's Farm near Dayton, Oregon. Barbera and Villhauer's gourds will likely be flying with the best of them. The duos tag line? "Some pumpkins are just born to fly." When pumpkins fly in Vancouver, they're aiming for 1000 meters.
