Home Interiors 2012: These are a Few of My Favorite Things

One of my perk assignments as a Home Stager, is to research what’s trending for home interiors in 2012. Current, fresh style goes a long way with Buyers – after all, you may be competing with new home construction and models are staged keeping home interior design trends in mind. Here are just a few of my favorite things to give your home a stylish, staged update in 2012:

1. Jute/Hemp/Sisal Rugs lovely texture, warmth, and plays well with others (meaning they’ll gladly take the supporting role to the more “extroverted patterns” in the room). They don’t even mind being layered with a dramatic accent rug.

They’re not the new kids in town for 2012, however the "new twist" is using colored jute rugs  – glorious tonal variations give a subdued hint of color without overbearing the feature of the room - those rich, warm hardwoods!

2. Sunburst Mirrors – a strong element to play up the room's focal point  (ideal for over a fireplace). Of course, we all know that mirrors are a lovely way to reflect more light in a dark room, thus creating the illusion of a larger space (always a positive in staging).

3. Acrylic Chairs – also called “ghost” chairs. They’re a perfect staging solution for tight dining areas or space-challenged rooms.

4.     Pendant Lighting – Now more than ever, lighting plays a key role in highlighting your home’s architectural features (like this island). Product Designers have come out of the woodwork, lately to make affordable, well-designed fixtures so your home outshines the competition.

5.     Large-scale Artwork - A little drama goes a long way in making a BIG impact with Buyers.  Oversize artwork is a shout out to Buyers that,         Hey look at this place...wouldn’t you want to live this lifestyle?

Cheers to a successful sale!

Thank you, Gary. Yes, isn't that a great shot...IKEA $149. Dramatic artwork/photography can make an emotional connection with Buyers and once they've connected to your home, they're commited, and an offer soon follows.

Kim love your choices.  I could spend my entire staging budget on large art but there's not much need right now.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kim--these are some great trends.  Love the ghost chairs and I have always loved over-sized art.

Maureen - LOVE the giraffes. Artwork evokes an emotion and that one makes me smile:) No surprise, but the Godfather is pretty powerful as well! BTW great use of color balance in this room.

Thanks for visiting, Ginger. I know what you mean, I carry a few big pieces in my inventory, but will have wait for the right project to add more.

Hi Janet - I really like finding pieces that can do double duty and these are a few favorites! Thank you.

Kim, this is a great advice not only for sellers but for the people who are thinking about to re-decorating their homes. I love all of your choices in new design trends. In my newsletters I cover both aspects: re-design and home staging because some of my clients are home owners who are interested in decorating on the budget. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Anna. Your newsletter is probably well received by homeowners! Sharing cost effective design ideas is always so appreciative for those who don't have the time to research what's out there or the ability to visualize how they can use it.

Kim - Oh, you've chosen all of my favourite things, too!  I haven't seen coloured jute rugs, but these look very interesting.  I love, love, love the starburst mirror - I really need to add one to my inventory.  Of course, the ghost chairs are to die for, and brilliant for small spaces, since they don't take up any visual space.  Great inspiration here!

Hi Sally, thank you! Some of this is on my wish list for next year's inventory, too. I have a redesign client who is ordering this beautiful green/brown jute rug for her living room. I'll have to post pics of the before and after soon. Thanks for coming by:)

Kim - I love jute rugs and they go just about anywhere with any decor. I also am a fan of large scale art, especially on a large, plain wall that begs for some interest! I live in a more traditional area so as much as I love the "ghost" chair it wouldn't fit in with traditional furnishings, but when I stage more contemporary homes, I love them! Thanks for the list of the newest products!

Hi Kristine, its always fun to see what's trending for the new year and if we can apply it to our design style for staging. Not everything is for everybody, but I love thinking about how to appeal to the specific buyer demographic. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Kim! Loved this post and the upcoming trends -- great example pics too make me really inspired.  We have hundreds of large art pieces in our inventory -- and I always am buying more -- they always look SO much better than small art!

Thank you, Margaret. Large, dramatic artwork is hard to resist. If you can't be there in person to exclaim how great this house is, artwork that stirs your soul can immediately speak to a buyer.
