Hey Pinterest peeps...  What am I doing wrong? Help!

Maureen McCabe's "Rainbow"  board

Maureen McCabe Rainbows pinned

Right now Friday, January 6, 2012... above is how I see my "Rainbow" board.  I have been playing with Pinterest a bit.  I joined it long, long ago and for the longest time had two boards with one image on each, things I found on other's "boards" and "re-pinned."  Last week I started "pinning."  I found the "Pin It" tool and installed it on my tool bar on my laptop and desktop.

Pin It on my toolbar This ugly liitle thing with just the words has happened to me a number of times.  I delete and retry. I tried pinning this picture of "rainbow lights" directly from the photographer's Flickr (CC license) and it did not work.  I used the photo of the arches on a Columbus street in a post on ColumbusBestBlog.com (my WordPress.org blog) since the owner shared it with a Creative Commons license which allows commercial use.  Then I tried to "pin it" from that page.

Are you using the "Pin It" tool?   Sometimes it works for me and sometimes it does not.  What's the trick?

Oh and I would love to discuss what Pinterest says about Copyright.  I took down a lot of what I had "re-pinned" after thinking about things, reading some discussions on Quora and then rereading what Pinterest says about copyright.

This is a Re-Blog of Christine's Pinterest post... originally titled: "Have You Discovered Pinterest?"

Have you heard of Pinterest?  If you enjoy Photography, Stuff, and Ideas and would like to have your own personal bulletin board to save thoughts and images – then you might fall in love withPinterest.

If you find something interesting or super cool online while surfing the world wide web, it’s a great way to capture and share the image. Pin the things you like to your boards!

You can name all your own boards.  It’s a way to share your personality with others, not to mention a way to save & store all the things you like.  It’s my ONLINE Scrapbook.

Warning….it can be addicting.

It’s like our world is at your fingertips.

Check out My Pinterest!  I’ve set up separate boards for My Garden, Words, Fabulous Foods, Science, Visual WOW, Crafts & Projects, Places To Go, Old Stuff I Like, and Cool Stuff.

I don’t use my Pinterest account for my Gainesville FL Real Estate Business, this is just for fun…yet I do collect and pin photos for Life in Gainesville!

Happy Pinning!

The Pin tool is fickle as to when it works and when it doesn't work. I wouldn't be too worried about the Copyright. When the Pin tool works correctly, you should be able to go to your board, click the picture, and it will take you back to the source. What Pinterest-ers need to be careful about is when they re-pin something.

I agree the pin it is crazy....sometimes it seems like it isn't working...then it will pin it 3 times when I go to my board....I hadn't thought about copy right since the source is usually there in the link...may need to give that more thought!!

Ariana Thanks for the comment. I would be real worried about Copyright.  Have you  read about it, on Pinterest?  Just like any other social media, you as a user are saying you have the right to use the image.  If you don't have the right to use the image it is like anything else online Pinterest will take it down if the rightful owner complains.  If you don't have the right to use it (not licensed with a CC license, not your own work, not something you are going to take the time to get permission to use) you could end up paying big bucks for using it.

If you see pretty yellow maps of Virginia or Delaware Maryland stay away from the content (this may mean nothing to anyone outside the real estate industry who has been active on ActiveRain or RealTalk. )

I was thinking Pinterest was "Fair Use" because when you look at pins on Pinterest it is a thumbnail but I was reading that it probably is not "Fair Use" on Quora.  And even if I think it is Fair Use if it is the rightful owner thinks it is not fair use, that takes all the fun out of Pinterest for me.

Deborah I was "repinning" content from a couple of social media icons (people in the RE industry)  and I noticed the source of pins was content that is clearly marked "All Rights Reserved."  Have the owners of the content given permission to them to share it?   Source being there in the link doesn't matter if it is linking to Google Images or an "All Rights Reserved" photo on Flickr or any image that you do not have a legal right to use.

A Pinterest link to  Lenn Harley's sites or online content if I want to share one of her pretty maps is probably not going to satisfy her is it?

I'm still struggling with the "Pin It"

Going out on a limb here because I don't think you like me... I think this gal voiced the concern well: http://just-precious.com/2012/01/04/pinterest-educate-your-users-about-content-theft/ When used properly I don't see it being any different than facebook when you attach a link you like. As long as you are not passing the content (graphics) off as your own, or benefiting from it commercially, it's simply telling those that follow you, "Hey, check this website out, really cool," And I'm not sure anyone wouldn't want to be thought of that way.

However, the Pin it, has worked for me everytime but I have to make sure I just paste the link, then find a suitable image on the page.. usually something that has to do with the topic or pin. Make sure you have created a board for the item.  It's just as if you tweeted it, you are simply getting someone to click through to the website to find the receipe, hairsyle, decor tip, etc...

Hope it helps :)

Tammy I hope your latest post is not misrepresenting what I have written here.  I hope you are referring to another Re-Blog of Christine's post when you say someone believes Pinterest is stealing.

Actually it was more Ariana's comment and your response but I have seen a couple blogs about the concerns and it got me thinking about it. So do you think it's different from Facebook? I wasn't misrepresenting just throwing out the observation. It is an interesting thought... I hadn't thought about it being that way until I heard this and started reading up on it.  Have you figured it out? It's pretty addicting once you get going... I find myself repinning and browsing more than anything.

You could probably say, you don't have to worry about copyright on ActiveRain.  People copy and paste content from Associated Press articles on ActiveRain.  If someone told me not to worry about copyright in sharing content on ActiveRain I would respond exactly the same.  The fact that people use content they do not have the right to use on ActiveRain does not make ActiveRain stealing.

Switch out the word ActiveRain in the paragraph above for Pinterest.

You could probably say, you don't have to worry about copyright on ActiveRain.

If Ariana or anyone does not want to worry about copyright on content they curate that's their perogative. I am going to worry about copyright where ever I create or curate content but I am not saying Pinterest is stealing.

Hmmm, I have never heard of Pinterest before.  I will have to check it out.  I will always be worried about copyright as it can get mighty expensive and folks might not be so willing to be understanding if you made an oops.
